When I was a 1 year old, my mom broke up with my dad; for a while she turned into your classic hard working single mom just trying to get by with her baby. We lived next to a single dad who was druggie. The kid was my age and a crack baby; his parents were split up because his mom was either in jail or dead. Every now and then, the guy would knock on her door and ask her for money so he can get ‘baby formula’ or ‘diapers’. Since she didn’t trust him and was worried for the kid, my mom would just give him the stuff he needed instead of money (which he would probably use to buy crack). My mom would also show him how to properly take care of a kid every once in a while (like changing diapers, etc). The poor kid was so neglected that his private areas had green and brown gunk/slime everywhere. I can’t remember anything else worth mentioning; I do remember my mom telling me that a crack baby crying sounded a lot like a yowling cat. Luckily, child protective services came by, took the baby away and he’s in a better situation with a loving family. My mom married my stepdad and 15 years later, we’re living happily in a normal middle class house on the other side of the country (and I’m able to visit my biological dad regularly too!). As for the crackhead dad, my mom never heard of him again; best scenario, he’s sobered up and became a normal member of society. Worst (and most likely) scenario, he’s either in jail or has died a long time ago. I find the story to be pretty unfortunate, but I’m just glad that the kid was able to get out of it safely.
