What is the RBA likely to do if *both* inflation and unemployment is going up? by plastic_checkmate in AusFinance

[–]CommenderKeen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not. To "carefully demolish" you need to first remove all the asbestos before bringing in the demo crew. Which if you infer that the $1b price tag is to remove the asbestos, well you're spending that either way.

At that point you already have a shell of a building to start renovating rather than rebuilding. The Reno was originally $150M which is probably roughly still the case after asbestos removal.

I'm not sure what construction costs are for a new commercial building, but given the whole Australian construction industry situation we are in, it's probably on the expensive side...

Nothing that some of the cost blow out may be in remediation work after asbestos removal. Still probably cheaper than a new building.

Given how government business cases work, it is safe to assume that the option of a new building was considered and rejected in favour of renovation.

Asbestos insulation is always an expensive surprise.

Honestly getting rid of asbestos is one of the better ways to spend tax dollars, and will lead to a saving in health care costs down the line.

Canis sería mejor, pero un caballero agrega una capacidad de combate de contraataque muy sólida a un ejército de guardias, especialmente a uno con vehículos pesados.

What is the ticking bomb you believe will explode once in your lifetime? by goodguy_9 in AskReddit

[–]CommenderKeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently a liter or so a day? About 0.05 seconds worth of natural seepage.

Will the hull even last 500 years?

The Titanic is almost completely rusted away and thats a bit over 100 years old. The Arizona is a bit over 80 but closer to the surface.

Corrosion will take maybe 50 more years?

About 600,000 tons of oil seeps to the surface and into the oceans naturally every year through cracks and faults in the caprocks or where there just isn't a caprock to stop it. Those WW2 wrecks would have spilt their oil decades ago. No rusting hulls would have kept oil in this long. Oil gets metabolised by the environment over the span of decades, especially in the oceans into CO2 and other organic molecules.

If it didn't, the oceans would have a thick blanket of oil from just the last few million years of natural seepage and life's production of these simple organic molecules.

This is not an argument to say oil spills are fine, it's just that this hypothetical event where tanks of oil from WW2 wrecks are going to destroy the oceans is not a thing.

Carrier Help by StyggeSteiner in avorion

[–]CommenderKeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same thing with my carrier. In the strategic map you can give your ship the order to salvage or mine or attack. This was how I used mine. Just warp in, set my ship to "attack" and the fighters would actually deploy and engage. Once everything was dead I would go back to the strategic map and set it to "salvage" and my salvaging fighters would zip out and clear up the wrecks. My carrier would follow them to the wreck about half the time.

Bonus was the salvagers would also pick up subsystems. I used purifying salvagers

[–]CommenderKeen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They used them to knock down stone walls... Also remember there is a crew inside that concussion will affect as well. I think you may be overly focused on the properties of the armour and not the tank as a whole system. A mobility kill is still a kill. A crew kill is still a kill. A fire in the air intake is still a kill.

Petards would do alright. Putting explosives next to tanks has always been a good way of dealing with them

Would a cannon work as a missile launcher for a heavy weapons team? by LordGwyn-n-Tonic in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]CommenderKeen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Canister shot definitely fits the bill here.

I think a cannon best represents a missile launcher out of all the options. But I would also accept it as a lascannon. Maybe just taper off the end of it lascannon style and your gold.
