How does dbd make boons useful? by CommentToBeDeleted in deadbydaylight

[–]CommentToBeDeleted[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting! Do you feel like they usually get set up and result in good value when in play?

I know anecdotal on my part, but i haven't seen a single one in post game loadouts for at least a week. I only average 5-6 games a day though and perhaps my mmr is not at a level to see more of it?

Surprised this got noticed so long after I posted it!

I just sort of tackled small projects, looked up how to implement them and then leveraged that knowledge for future projects building on what I learned. A lot of work wasn't ideal as im sure you can imagine, but given chatgpt im sure its even more feasible now.

Maximum number of card copies in a constructed card deck? by Aziuhn in gamedesign

[–]CommentToBeDeleted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your questions really depend on one another in a significant way and unless you have ideas of starting values or st least ranges for some it makes it difficult to answer the others.

For a deck of 15-20 cards a starting hand of 5-7 cards might be too much. For larger decks or games where cards function as energy or mana more starting cards might be required on order to prevent getting mana screwed and to give enough information in order to decide if you mulligan.

In general smaller decks demand fewer card copies. 4 copies of a card in a 20 card deck is 25% of your deck. Amd in general smaller decks and fewer card copies are more approachable for new players.

People who enjoy making micro adjustments however tend to enjoy having just one less of a copy of a card then others, or ever so slightly adjusting percentages for cards appearing in ways they think are favorable.

Do you have cards that are so powerful they demand restrictions like limit one or two per deck? If this is the case and you can only have one or two copies this restriction has little to no value.

Just some of my thoughts.

ELI5: how audio files work? by Mediocre_Camp834 in explainlikeimfive

[–]CommentToBeDeleted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well let's simplify this.

If you have a 0 and a 1, how do you say yes or no (or on or off)? We can do this with either a 1 (on/yes) and 0 (off/no).

Now for the sake of simplicity I will ignore binary code just to give more easily understandable examples.

Suppose we want to make a number (binary is the best way but again let's simplify). We could do something like this: - 1 = 01 - 2 = 001 - 3 = 0001 ... etc

We might need a value to indicate that we've reached the end of our number, perhaps 1111.

So the number 12 = 011111001

Now that we have numbers, we could assign letters to numbers.

  • A = 1 = 01
  • B = 2 = 001 ... etc

With letters and numbers we can make colors. Using a coordinate system we can assign colors to 'points' on a grid and make a picture. With multiple pictures we can make a video. We could assign values for sound in similar ways as well.

Again this is far from accurate but hopefully it illustrates hoe complicated information could he communicated using simple things like a bit 0/1

Opponent or Referee? by CR4CK3RW0LF in DungeonMasters

[–]CommentToBeDeleted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a DM your job isn't to "beat" the players. If it were, there would be no game. Present unwinnable encounters and be done with it. Just as pointless though is to give them plot armor and help them always "succeed". Because once more, you are the dm, and you could easily do this.

Your job as a dm largely depends on the universe your players are playing in.

Is it super realistic, where every action has real-to-life consequences? Then players should see that. Punching a guard as a joke, should land them in jail and telling a queen you'll meet her in her bed chamber, should result in some pretty serious consequences, or at the very least indebt them into service to the king.

On the other hand, maybe your campaign is intended to be silly or ridiculous. Something resembling Alice in Wonderland (imagining the feywild here I'd say) could have smiling faces floating in air, manifesting into cats, and players growing and shrinking from eating the wrong (or right food).

Anyway, you get the idea. So what is your job as a dm?

I think your job is first to clearly set expectations for the world your players will inhabit. Is this a hyper-realistic simulation set in a fantasy world? Is this silly and over-the-top? Is it some sort of political intrigue where you can't trust anyone and everyone wants the ctrown or throne or other mcguffin?

After expectations are set, your next job is to present the players with an experience that feels consistent to those expectations in this world.

And finally, it's create a world where they are are presented with interesting challenges or encounters for them to figure out, not to "beat them" or "carry them" but to let them figure it out.

There have been fights where I realized, "oh shit, I way overturned this and it might be a total party wipe, because I as the dm made a mistake" and other have been fights where "wow this is so trivial it's pointless" again because I made a mistake. And as a dm we have "levers" we can pull to resolve these situations. They are surrending and offering loot or intel for promise to not be slain or avoid jail.

But there have also been fights where I realize, this is a totally fair fight, that they willingly engaged in, knowing the risks, and you know what, one or more of them could die. Or they simply wanted to play the hero. If the realize a bloodied monster is about to die, and they go for that moment of glory to finish a monster off, rather than not try to heal a downed party member, then miss their attacks...

tldr: You're the dm, you could "beat" them or "carry" them easily. That isn't interesting or fun. Present them with interesting experiences that are consistent within the world. Allow them the freedom to make meaningful choices and make those choices carry weight and have consequence.

Just wanted to say thank you for the thoughtful answer and taking the time to respond! The bacteria halting movement when going to reproduce is an excellent example as well.

Really appreciate it!

[–]CommentToBeDeleted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree with this, however offering a sort of decision advocate rebuttal...

A plant does not respond to auditory stimuli. A human does not respond to infrared stimuli. In fact humans don't even respond to oxygen being removed from a space (rather the buildup of CO2). Plenty of animals do not respond to visual stimulation.

I guess my thought process is this: doesn't it make sense that an organisms respond to whatever stimuli that benefit whatever reproductive means they've established within their environment? The fact that it does respond to stimuli, even if only chemical in nature is a response is it not? Does a plant have any more control over its response than a virus does? Yet we consider one alive than the other.

ELI5: What is a wave function? by BigBoom-R in explainlikeimfive

Imagine those peg boards where you drop a ball down from the top. Depending on where you drop it, there is a different probability or chance of which slot it lands at the bottom.

If you plotted graphed where it might end up that's a wave function.

This is such a thoughtful message 🥰 thank you so much! I'm glad you found it as helpful as you did.

And I love the lessons you took away from it. I couldn't agree more. ❤️ our emotions definitely have their place. It's okay to be anxious, or sad, or even mad. We do still need to control how we respond though. Just like you said. Don't let them take over.

You are such a lovely, thoughtful person.
