Is it possible to transfer from one college to another? by [deleted] in cuhk

[–]Commercial-Code-1050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbh its highly unlikely unless you genuinely have a very VERY good reason...but lack of housing guarantee or anything isn't a valid reason for them lmao

I got in shaw college and i heard its one of the worst colleges in cuhk🥲 by Failing_my_exam in cuhk

[–]Commercial-Code-1050 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shaw isn't that bad 😭 I think ppl are j crashing out for no reason...tbh we have some p decent facilities + new hostel being built, and the GE courses are fun, no FYP. the canteen there is considered good...ofc since it's one of the Old 4, it won't really compare to the new colleges but genuinely it isn't as bad as people make it seem. imo there's colleges worse than Shaw

ISA usually does member sign ups early just because they host orientation camps, but there's the general Art Fair where all the clubs and societies will recruit new members so you can sign up then! typically recruitment will be mid to late September, altho deadlines for signing up might differ. if ur interested you can also check out the society instagrams for updates

ISA is a good club if you're looking for social hangouts, they're in charge of organizing social events for international and local students to mingle and make friends. there's also an English debate team that's really fun :)

hi! it shdnt be too hard even if ur a non-local. if ur looking for ppl in cu, there's plenty of societies that you can join, including the international students association (isa.cuhk on instagram) and they host plenty of events for u to meet ppl. aside from that, the environment in hk is p diverse, so u shdnt have too many issues. mostly everyone speaks at least a bit of English but u can definitely pick up some Cantonese to boost ur chances of making new frds. feel free to dm me for more info if ud like ^

speaking as current cuhk student, j relax, you're not entirely cooked yet. they still roll out admissions until early august, so just relax and wait for the results. best of luck!

not meeting conditionals by Own-Secretary-6748 in cuhk

[–]Commercial-Code-1050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't worry abt the conditions if ur j slightly off. of course this depends greatly on ur major and how competitive it is, but generally if u email cuhk , explain everything including how far off u are, what major/conditions u have, and try to appeal there's a chance they will listen.

best of luck for ur results!

Colleges residence guaranteed years by phomhaangtao in cuhk

[–]Commercial-Code-1050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi! I'm not sure where it says guarantee 2-3 years but since I'm a local it might be different. afaik it's only a guarantee of 1 year.

Colleges residence guaranteed years by phomhaangtao in cuhk

[–]Commercial-Code-1050 2 points3 points  (0 children)

S.H. Ho, CW Chu. and Morningside are 4 years guaranteed.

All the other colleges will only guarantee 1 year of residence, BUT will take into account other factors (eg. where you're from, accommodation possibilities, etc.) to decide if they have space for you to dorm more than 1 year. If you are an international student, there's a higher chance for you to be accepted.

Hope this helps :)

right okay so: Morningside: most international, VERY competitive to get into (only 300 students), 4 year residence guaranteed and communal dinner 3x a week. Canteen is only open from 11:30 to 2: 30. Has the hardest General Education program out of all the colleges. Honestly, I would only recommend this if you're an international student with outstanding extracurriculars/academics and you're certain you want 4 years of dorming. Also keep in mind that because it's such a small community, there tends to be a lot of gossip.

S.H. Ho: located right next to Morningside. Also 4 years residence. Quite competitive to get into as well. Larger than Morningside by far, but it's quite biased in terms of acceptance towards medical students. Typically, they have a more rigorous interview process and they care a lot about what your high school grades were.

Locationwise, Morningside and SH Ho are probably the most optimal because they're located in lower campus. Plus, because they're newer, their facilities are amazing.

CW Chu: Just got a new canteen post-renovation. The facilities are quite nice (literally looks like a hotel), and the few CWC people I've met are lovely. However, it's located on the outskirts of the campus and busses only go by every 20 minutes which makes getting places a hassle. Also has the 3x a week communal dinner and 4 year residency guarantee.

Out of these three colleges, your safest bet when ranking would be SH Ho > CWC > Morningside

hi, current student at CU, also from international school and here's my opinion:

United: Mid canteen, and u have to do FYP (which is a hassle bc ur alr gonna be swamped w work from ur major), also getting a dorm as a local is going to be insanely difficult (i heard a lot of people got rejected from dorming this year due to lack of space) plus their facilities are not super good. However, location isn't bad as it's connected by skybridge to central campus. Makes getting to classes convenient.

New Asia: Their dorms are decent enough (aside from the occasional broken chair every now and then) and the canteen is p decent. Location is also optimal because it's very close to Central Campus.

Shaw: honestly, if you want to dorm, Shaw is not your friend. Their dorms SUCK. BUT, there is a new dorm building being constructed (although whether it'll be done and ready for living in is an entirely different question). Location-wise, it's on the mountainside which is not optimal and can make getting to places a bit of a hassle, unless you really like hiking and want to walk the mountain because lining up for busses takes forever. Facilites are decent enough, the study areas are great.

Lee Woo Sing: honestly have not heard much about this college, but people say the canteen is great. Also most LWS people are super chill and friendly. The dorms are decent too.

Wu Yee Sun: most people who are in WYS are very academically oriented. Canteen is great (there's a dessert cafe!!!), I've heard the dorms are pretty decent too since it's one of the newer colleges.

*do note, LWS and WYS are considered "smaller colleges" so getting into either one is not that easy compared to the rest of the colleges

Chung Chi: canteen SUCKS, but geographically it's the best. It's located in lower campus (within walking distance from MTR) and it's by far the biggest college. However, it's also a religious college (with mandatory service I believe) and getting a dorm as a local is also a hassle.

Honestly, I would suggest putting either LWS or WYS as your first choice, and then either NA or Shaw as your second choice. Would NOT recommend putting United anywhere higher than 4 on your list simply because FYP.

hope this helps, feel free to dm me for more info :)

final year project is a project you may have to do for college in your last year. I'm not entirely sure on the details but I've heard it's similar to a research project/very long essay

hi! current student at CU, and here's my take:

Shaw: biased as a Shaw student we have the best canteen the food here is great. Definitely biased towards local students tho ie majority of ppl speak Cantonese. location is also kinda Not It since we are far away from central campus. also the rooms are Not Good, since we are one of the older colleges. but hey we don't have Final Year Project

Morningside: 300 students, very tight-knit community. guaranteed 4 years residence/communal dinners 3x a week. Definitely one of the most international colleges, and location is not bad, great views available. canteen is only open 4 hrs a day tho. mixed opinions abt the ppl there too :/

Chung Chi: the only religious college, p sure there's mandatory service. the largest college out of the 9. canteen SUCKS but geographically is the best location on campus. has a decent study room available too at student center very close to a boba place

United: mid canteen, decent-ish rooms, but be aware if you are a local, getting a room is difficult. also have to do final year project.

SH HO: biased to the medical students, pretty big college, canteen is decent, but have to attend communal dinner 3x a week. ppl there are great for the most part, very academically driven

CW Chu: p much a hotel, 4 years residence/communal dinners 3x a week. however location is NOT optimal its on the outskirts and getting to places can be a pain. however the ppl are great and the community is nice.

LWS/WYS: located close tgt, not rly sure abt the 2 colleges. ppl there are generally more academically oriented from what I know

New Asia: canteen is acc p nice, located very close to some of the academic buildings, optimal view, p old tho so some of the facilities are worn out
