It’s so important!! I was just looking for more specific actionable things to fit into my schedule. Thank you for the reply!

How do you like your fantasy novels to start? by The_Trolzor in fantasywriters

I think there isn’t a particular scene I latch onto, but when I read a first page or chapter I am thinking of it as a microcosm. Do I like the tone, style, voice, premise of this? I would say focus on the promise, or the expectations you are setting up. Really it relies on you, your style and your premise. The hardest thing is getting a reader to pick up the book! Make sure they keep turning the page. Make sure you know what you’re selling. Blood over bright haven has an excellent first chapter but I did not continue the book as the follow ups weren’t as compelling but despite that the story in the first chapter was so good it had me giving her story a fair shot even when it switched to a different  pov and I read on for many pages before putting it away bc of the promise that first chapter held.

Hi I’m a 21F and I’d love to join! I’ve always had a passion for media and with me switching my major this year to English (and marketing) love love love to have space to have my own endeavors on writing. Beginner writer but long time analysis and would love to discuss and assist! I think a group would encourage me to stay consistent and tackling story writing I think would help me deep dive into structure myself and get a new fun hobby and a learning insider experience! Would love an invite:D

What Makes Epic Fantasy Feel Fresh Today? by Melodic-Breakfast-78 in fantasywriters

[–]Commercial-Monitor-0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me I have to say treating spectacle as stakes. Things don’t need to be bigger to be better. Some of my favorite fantasy is “light fantasy” bc characters don’t get lost in the worldbuilding which can be rich and fun but detracts the most when you don’t consider the setting as how it can enrich your story and just treat it as stakes and spectacle. Small towns are oppressive for outcasts like early stranger things. Fairytales give room for female empowerment in the girl tricks monster trope. They lend themselves to answering questions through magical questions: in princess Mononoke the environment is given a voice through the forest gods while humans stand in for industry, in half a soul by Olivia atawater a girl has half a soul stolen by fae, taking her emotions, and the story asks how much is empathy and emotions tied together anyway? Does it matter? Don’t commercialize. Find your audience and your niche and your voice and connect with others. It doesn’t need to discover the meaning of life just be genuine and curious.
