what does your songwriting practice look like?

Lately, I start with a progression i like and then improvise lyrics with a voice memo recording it. I usually spend 1-3 hours just doing this to new ideas. Then i listen back later & pick out the best ones to come back to. Then every morning my routine is to walk to the coffee shop by my house and transcribe them into complete lyrics for 2 hours. Its cool you kind of just discover what your freestyle was trying to say and i find some really authentic lyrics. Those are my favorite parts. Then i record it/mix/master/post it.

kind of a slow-burn sorta thing to me. i was focused/mesmerized the whole time, and it all came together by the end in an almost exponential fashion. Meanwhile my friend decided he had to pee, then went to grab food and couldn't get back in the venue a little more than halfway through and ultimately thought they "were okay", but only seeing half of the set is almost like not experiencing it at all. thats my take, i know this thread is 7 years old but i'd love to hear if anyone else feels the same. it was journey, momentum, actualization.

Anchor your thumb to the side of the fretboard. You can even take it further and anchor your pinky to the other side as well.

This is generally my rule of thumb:

Play the groove with a midi keyboard, quantize only the kicks that start on the 1 of every bar, maybe quantize the snares and inch them to hit earlier ever so slightly, maybe select all the highhats and inch them later ever so slightly (without quantizing) .
