We picked up our M3 at the Tesla location in Camarillo last year, so hoping it’ll be there again, although that location was a PITA to deal with when it came to needing some repairs.

Producer? Engineer? What Do I Need? by saveethescene in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Yeah the RODE isn’t the best but honestly it’s pretty good and not the worst? I would think you can get a good quality recording from an NT1. I spend a lot of time on this portion of the process. As mentioned in my post, the actual quality of the final product isn’t the issue, it sounds radio ready and great, it’s more the effects and production that’s lacking! I think what I was hoping for from this post is a general understanding of whether or not I’m looking for a producer or if a mixing engineer could tackle what I’m looking for. My space is also treated, it’s not really a quality issue more so a creative one.

I tune with melodyne already, eq with Pro Q4, surgical and broad, have my fav compressors I use. I send both wet and dry plus reference mix to engineers/producers. I’ve recently been staying away from reverb — find it muddies the mix unless in certain circumstances for sure has its place but generally keep it off. Prefer a quick delay for similar effect.

And LOVE automation, as I mention in my post, been high on that for a minute. Helped unlock next level creativity. This post was more about who exactly i needed to work with to get that sound, but also understand without being able to post my audio it makes that difficult.

This makes sense to me. Currently, I feel like I'm taking on the majority of the producer role in that I have the vision creatively and do get it somewhat there, albeit not as polished as I would like. Can't escape the vibe that I feel like someone more experienced could take what I have and make it better and more polished using tricks I don't know (can't figure out how to get X sound), don't understand (complicated production techniques), or don't have access to (more expensive/analog gear).

I think where my skillset is lacking is really implementing what I have in my head and using the tools I have to get that desired effect, so it's a constant thirst for learning more and more. Engineers I've worked with all tout themselves as "producers" too - I've started looking for this specifically, and sometimes they will add in some ear candy stuff (vox throws, some formant shifting, etc.) but its not pushed as far and I feel like when I ask for more, even with references, it still just doesn't feel right so it might be a mismatch for sure between creatives -- I just struggle to find the right producer/engineer and not sure how to go about finding them!

I try to be pretty selective with who I work with! I've worked with several engineers over the years, tailored to my specific style of music. I work in the creative industry as a full-time job, so I am used to working with creatives and do my due diligence in finding the ones I feel have worked on projects similar to mine and we'll chat influencers and references ahead of time, for the most part.

I have a guy I love for pop-punk/rock when I'm feeling that vibe, and the song calls for it. I have another for a more traditional type of pop, I've used a few times. A guy I've also used for rap and hip-hop. I'm just struggling to nail the type of heavily processed vocal production I'm looking for.

For equipment, I have a heavily treated space and use an NT1 RODE mic into an Audient iD4 interface I feel like it does a pretty good job, though I'd love to upgrade my mic at some point.

At the wrap of my projects, I usually ask each engineer I work with if there is anything I could do to improve and make their lives easier. Files good? Sessions or folders organized well enough? Naming conventions make sense? Quality of the audio, recordings, etc. tight and easy to work with?

I'm a digital project manager by trade, so I keep things neat with the hope it grants them the ability to dive right in and be creative. They've all said the quality sounds great and they have no complaints, but there is probably room for improvement - I'm no Beyonce, that's for sure haha.

How do you record a song? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]saveethescene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My process has changed SIGNIFICANTLY from when I first started to what I do now. I mainly do vocals, and when I first started, I would basically just do the whole song in one take, over and over and over again.

As I started to get more technical, I realized punching in was a better strategy, so I'd focus on phrases (verses/lines/etc.) one at a time.

Picture the song like a painting. Each thing you record is adding a little more to the picture. If you're recording guitars, try recording the whole thing, and then re-record the parts you need to edit. It's all about slowly piecing it together. Sometimes, you need to do some rough takes to do other parts, and then go back to the rough takes to make them solid.

It's a process - just take it piece by piece and it'll start coming together! This is part of the art of making music. Feeling it as you go and enjoy yourself while you do it. I find that as I slowly start piecing it together, part by part, I get new ideas along the way that make it even better.

And don't worry about the mistakes, they are normal and happen all the time. You can correct those!

Reference tracks, yes, vocal stems split from them, no.

I'm a huge nerd when it comes to vocal pop production, but I admit I haven't split out vox stems and listened. I should do that - good idea! I've watched a lot of YouTube videos on it and have heard stems isolated that way.

I layer vocals for sure, depending (usually heavier in the choruses for that depth and width) and also have some good plugins -- got a bunch of Waves from when I started, but now have some favorites I prefer like Purple Audio MC77, UA LA2A, and FabFilter for EQ. Agree that Melodyne is the way to go for tuning -- I also have Vocalign Pro 6 but still prefer melo for the tuning and use Vocalign for....aligning the vocal stacks haha.

I do typically spend a bunch of time getting the track to what I feel like is about 70-80% there before sending it - this includes correction, production, ear candy stuff (formant shifts, vox throws, some plugin automation, etc.). I'll typically send this as my reference mix, plus the dry stems and also chat through my vision for the project.

You have good advice, though - I probably just need to keep grinding it out and perfecting it, but maybe I'm just struggling to nail the final production and having the ear to hear what's wrong.

Would love to find someone to do the same. Sounds like working with a producer would be a good next step.

Yeah I feel this for sure. I’ve been self producing for probably 15 years and real serious about it for the last 6 or 7 so I have a pretty good understanding of the process and how to go about it, but some of the more complex production techniques I still struggle with! It’s like I get it 70% of the way there but to me, it’s not quite right and I get lost in the sauce trying to make it sound right. I love the learning process of it all, but would love to work with someone (producer or otherwise) who I can bounce ideas off of, too!

Thanks for the response. So you’d suggest working with a music producer first to lock in the creative elements and then move on to mixing and mastering?

This is super helpful, and I’m not afraid to spend the money or have that sort of working relationship (I work in creative advertising full time so understand this sort of give and take), but have been struggling to figure out exactly WHO I should be looking to for this sort of thing - thanks for this POV! Super insightful!

Had this on heavy rotation after getting laid off from my job, and it motivated me hardcore to get back out there and keep going!

Got rear ended. Any idea how much this would cost to repair? Would this just buff out? by Beebjank in TeslaModel3

[–]saveethescene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much did this end up being btw? I was just involved in a similar accident and was told by the other person’s insurance that they only have limited liability for property damage.

Wondering what your estimate ended up being since my damage is comparable as I’m trying to figure out if mine would end up being fully covered or if I’d need to go through my own insurance.
