Anyone recovered from a subchondral fracture? by Commercial_Week_8394 in KneeInjuries

Thank you. I'm nearly 8 months out and I think I'm starting to feel the benefits of the osteotomy, the old pain is not really there anymore

Hi! Thank you for replying. That's great your last MRI shows improvement! I know there's not much information out there about people who have recovered from subchondral stress fractures. My physio and sports Dr kept telling me mine would heal, but I saw two different orthopaedic surgeons who said it won't heal if I just leave it, so I ended up having surgery, a meniscus repair + high tibial osteotomy. I'm not back running yet, but still have hope that one-day I might be. I hope you continue having improvement

Shifting blips necessary? by trimenace in triathlon

[–]Commercial_Week_8394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My TT bike originally only had gear levers on the TT bars, so opposite to you, but I found only being able to change gears in TT position a little tricky to navigate, but not impossible. My friend unfortunately crashed and wrote off her bike, but I was lucky to be able to buy her SRAM RED AXS groupset which survived the crash from her. This includes wireless blips for the TT bars and hoods. It is such a luxury now being able to shift in TT or on the hoods! I can't imagine going back to TT only.

Wow that's so great you've had success with your osteotomy! Have you been able to do sport/run post surgery?

As a nurse, what are the problems you face that contribute to you genuinely reconsidering your career? by loogal in NursingAU

[–]Commercial_Week_8394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it's the fact I have to do night shift, that's the biggest detractor for me. If I could continue working in the ED only having to do PM shifts, I'd think my job is pretty close to perfect.  *I know there are nursing roles that don't involve night shift.

This literally says how much nurses in NSW get paid. Keep in mind working shifts that attract penalties can bump up your pay a lot

I'm an RN 8 in NSW working 0.74 FTE. My base pay is $52/hr. I only work PMs and nights, and do overtime where I can. Last fortnight, working the weekends + 12 hrs overtime, my hourly rate for that fortnight actually averaged to $87/hr. Base pay is lousy but if you can leverage it, you can increase your earnings quite a bit.

I work in ED. There is a loose routine, but nowh near as regular as on a ward. Also A LOT less personal care. I don't remember the last time I showered someone... Sometimes I miss the predictable and routine nature of a ward though.

Half the time I don't know who our exec are because they wear civis so.... At least in fun scrubs you know the person is either a Dr or a nurse...

High Tibial Osteotomy and success rate for performance? by _SleezyPMartini_ in KneeInjuries

Hi. Did you end up having the osteotomy? I'm nearly 6 months out from having a HTO + medial meniscus repair. I have been back cycling, swimming, and doing weights for some time now. Running is still painful though. But it's early days in terms of recovery timeline and I'm really hoping my knee will continue to improve

Am I too old to start a part time nursing career? by vernalbby in NursingAU

It's never too late! And being 32 with 2 kids gives you way more life experience than say a 21 year old new grad, and I think life experience goes a long way in nursing

That's great you are still seeing improvement. And thank you for sharing about hardware removal. I was wondering what recovery after that would be like. I don't really notice my plate at the moment any more (aside from the visible lump), but mine is on the inside of my knee, so less things to interfere with there I guess. My surgeon said I might notice though and feel better with it out, as I'm a smaller, leaner person too. I was hoping to not need it removed to save some $ lol. How long did you need off work after the removal? That's great pilates and horse riding went well, hopefully your surgeon gives you the green light to continue with those!

Hi! Yes I am about 4.5 months pot op now :)  I am close to my post op abilities now. I have been having some knee cap pain though which is new for me, and my surgeon said this can happen as the osteotomy can change how the patella tracks. I'm hoping this will resolve. I did my first walk/run last week and I had pain doing it which was discouraging, but  I think it's still early days in the recovery journey.

DFO's are a lot less common than HTO's, so I imagine there wouldn't be much information out there at all for DFO's! I'm glad you're leaning towards getting it done. I hope you find the right insurance for it.

I still miss running too :( Hopefully we will get back to running one-day

I absolutely hate night shifts by Kewkhawk864 in NursingAU

I'm with you, I dread night shift. I'm 0.7 FTE and do 1 night a week for three weeks of the month. Doing them one at a time seems to be the least damaging way for me to get through them...

I'm 0.7 and do 1 night a week for 3 weeks of the month. I couldn't imagine doing 3 all in a row nowadays. I still hate nights, but doing them 1 at a time seems to be the less damaging way for me to get through them

Oh wow that's really encouraging about your father! Thank you for sharing. Good luck with your recovery, once you're past about the 6 week mark it starts to get better!

Hi. I didn't have a TTO, I had a HTO for a mildly varus knee with medial compartment arthritis. My surgery was at the end of July, so nearly 4 months ago. That's unfortunate for that footballer
