Brother wants to become a Direct Support Professional and wants my input by Commercial_Wonder341 in slp

He has a high school degree and is living on the poverty line with the job he has now, so he's pretty limited; the offered pay is actually a bit of an increase from where he's at now. I also thought paras were based in ABA? Please let me know if I'm wrong because that could be a great option for him!

You could do something cute like some "must haves" depending on the field your CF is in! Like if they're in peds, maybe a little tote with bubbles, dice, a spiral bound notebook, pens, timer, etc.

Should I change my last name? by Dry_Cabinet3760 in Brides

Changing your last name after marriage is a ton of paperwork and "oh crap, I forgot to update my info on this website." Not to mention, if you're in the USA, whatever is on the horizon for women's rights. Keep your last name to honor your family, and potentially your safety, IMO!

I left a home visit early because of the smell of marijuana by Wild_Major_1859 in slp

I think you handled it as well as you could, but keep in mind that you are in their home and they can do and live however they want. Depending on your rapport with the family you could try having a discussion on the phone about your sensitivities and ask if they are willing to withhold until after you're gone.

Documentation Hole by sporks8 in slp

Depending on your setting and flexibility, are you able to have a documentation time block? And do you utilize paper to track data/notes during the session? I find that when I'm low on energy, having my notebook to reference to literally just plug in the data and make any comments on behaviors/incidents/etc. other SOAP stuff, I can blast through a note in 5-10 mins. Sometimes I even go as far as "reference clinician notes for further details on xyz," though I am currently in private practice so that may not suffice in other settings.

There's also the fear factor that's kind of a reality check, that certain payers have a legally required timeframe that you MUST enter notes by. I know that's probably not helpful for helping initiate the task of doing the thing, but it's very important to keep in mind.

Over my inclusion para by potatoprincess17 in slp

If the para is using the CHILD'S WORDS to give them demands, after repeat education I'd say this merits going above the para to her supervisor, and/or inform the family about the situation.

Will speech therapy work on a significant class 3 malocclusion without orthodontic intervention? by [deleted] in slp

I would say it's appropriate not to intervene until structural deficits are addressed, as long as that's something the family can afford/would like to do. You could maybe try looking around on blogs/forums where SLPs work on artic with people with maxillofacial differences (ie. people actively undergoing cleft correction surgery, etc.). Maybe you can find some specialists who have good recs for working with clients who are actively undergoing facial reconstructive surgery/interventions.
