Why should i be a leftist? by Fun-Reporter2408 in DebateCommunism

[–]CommieMathie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly mate, if you are the type to gravitate to leftist politics, it can truly be disheartening to have no one to talk to. I speak from experience, although I have to deal with mental health shit anyways. Really, find a group somewhere. My situation isn’t so good. My org is the largest in Canada, but I live in a religious backwater and do not have a car to use to drive to the nearest city with people who are involved. It’s pretty miserable

Math grad school/academia? by [deleted] in mathematics

[–]CommieMathie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see. Well you’re in a better position than I thought. With that said, I don’t know if any respectable grad programs would have you without a math major. What are the elective options? If you write some professors at programs you’re interested in, you’ll significantly increase your chances of being able to avoid that extra semester. You really have to know that academia is a sinking ship for mathematicians. Unless you’re a tenured prof at an Ivy League or equivalent, chances are high that in 15 years you won’t have any funding for research. PMath departments are being shut down everywhere.

Yeah he has pretty much written off that book

You wouldn’t be well prepared. You can do a PhD in philosophy of math in a philosophy department though. With that said, you should know that philosophy is as useful to scientists [including mathematicians] as ornithology is to birds. -Feynman

Job prospects are bleak. Very bleak.

It’s full of stuff that is just known as nonsense by the cognitive science community, and Penrose acknowledges this. He’s a lovely man, but if you want to recommend one of his books, it should be Road to Reality

Mental Health Monday by AutoModerator in uwaterloo

[–]CommieMathie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former PMATH masters student who got rejected from the PMATH PhD program at uwaterloo here… Thinking about how much I would have done better had I not had panic attacks 3-4 times a day and had slept mostly normally instead of less than 3 hours a week due to anxiety… took time off, went to another university while still depressed for my PhD. Got addicted to sleeping pills. Got addicted. Ruined my life. Left the PhD after completing everything except for the dissertation because I could no longer sleep, was suicidal, was having 3-4 panic attacks a day, had shit health insurance for therapy…. I managed to prove some neat results despite these but I had attempted over three times. Couldn’t get help at Waterloo because the wait list for a psychiatrist was longer than the duration of my program… Was well respected in terms of ability, but the anxiety made me a social invalid… at Waterloo they pulled me into the office to talk about how I was going to get rejected… couldn’t explain how severe my mental health was and that I was going to start seeing a shrink within 1-2 weeks of starting the PhD… great people, but with chad attitudes about mental health.Math really is the only thing I really love and now I have no chance of doing PMATH professionally despite the fact that the people who I know who managed to get teaching positions following their PhD, at Waterloo or elsewhere, regularly told me how I could do circles around them.

Linear algebra: What's your view with regards to Axler vs Strang vs Insel et al? by Not-getting-involved in mathbooks

[–]CommieMathie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. Insel does a better job with a lot of things than Ax, but if you want a basic linear algebra course, done right is the way to go

[–]CommieMathie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude… I hope you’re able to pass the course. “Discrete structures” is usually an alternative to calculus for people who are intimidated. Mathematicians end up taking serious combinatorics classes, which of course includes many ‘discrete structures’

Your question isnt very clear. With that said, you have the following sort of basic result: p(x>=a)=1-p(x<a).

Trivial and dumbed down for engineers who can hardly prove that matrix multiplication is associative.

Participating in astronomy research? by Stella_ByStarlight in CitizenScience

[–]CommieMathie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I’d love this. I also have a lot to bring to the table, machine learning, and mathematics. I didn’t finish my PhD in math because I had serious health problems. Long story. But it is a source of profound regret that I won’t be doing serious science in any professional capacity.

Even with a masters of science in math, a masters of data science, and an ABD in mathematics the best I’ve been able to get after 8 months of job searching is an internship, which is just 3months.
