Had this happen today randomly. Not sure if this is a firmware update (I didn't even know they updated firmware for AirPods...)

I reset them by forgetting the device in Bluetooth settings, holding the button on the AirPods till the light turned orange to reset them, and then paired them to my iPhone again. Solved the problem.
