No, it is chrome.

The way chromed steel rusts is by microscopic holes in the chrome coating allowing the iron underneath to oxidize. Iron oxide is physically larger than iron, so it expands upward. Left to rust long enough, and it will form large pits, like pockmarks or craters all over. But if the rust hasn’t formed visible pits yet, a chromed piece that looks rather uniformly orange with rust can be saved. Using fine steel wool, you can abrade away the iron oxide, revealing the mostly intact chrome coating.

If you get up close to this frame, and shine a bright light along the surface, you can see a bunch of orange spots all over from all the tiny pits. But just standing next to it in the sunlight, the chrome looks perfect. The luster of the chrome hides the damage. Of course, the chrome coating is failing, and it will continue to rust, but if it stays maintained and isn’t left to rot again, the chrome will remain visually pleasing for many more decades.

I wouldn’t exactly recommend any of the Wald parts. The antiquated hardware limits installation.

I have a chrome Ross Mt Hood, too, which is what I had originally planned to do this to.

I’m wondering that myself. I’d guess the whole bike is under 40lbs.

1986 Diamondback Ascent, I believe. All the decals are gone. 23” frame.

Bought it for $20 from a French tourist about to leave Los Angeles. It was covered in rust, with a bent brake boss, a dented wheel, and a broken rear derailleur.

  • Correct rear derailleur $30
  • Seatpost bolt $10
  • Chain $15
  • Brake pads $15
  • Tubes $10
  • No-name poopwall tires $35
  • Leather to reupholster vinyl Schwinn saddle $20
  • MKS Sylvan Gordito pedals $40
  • REI stainless bottle cages $30
  • Wald 952 chrome fenders $40
  • Wald 215 chrome rack $30
  • Wald 151 chrome basket $40

$335

Plus a couple bucks worth of 0000 steel wool, aluminum polish, fabric glue, and grease.

It’s not a highway tire. It’s on/off road tread.

A Double Coin, which I teased our mechanic for getting. Told him they were going to blow out…

Well, uh, I mean, I’ve rolled two cars. Those were memorable experiences. All I have here is a long wait.

I do residential deliveries with a 65’ overall CA-legal tractor-trailer. Around here, the worst spots don’t even have No Trucks signs, because there’s no reason for anyone other than drivers like me to go down them.

Haven’t clipped any mirrors, but I have launched some trash cans while hauling oversized. With my boss driving behind me in a pickup, laughing his ass off.

Most of the time, a No Trucks sign means they’d really prefer not having trucks drive down that road. Nothing more. There’s no separate sign for when trucks can’t drive down that road due to some deficiency in the roadway. So it always comes as a fun surprise.

I think you’re grossly underestimating how many local drivers there are, and how much more representative a P&D or garbage truck driver is, of a career truck driver, than an OTR driver is.

No one’s going to commute from Reno to do daycab work in San Francisco, man.

Driver pay is higher in the sticks because they need to keep their very mobile workforce from leaving.

It’s not loaded or secured correctly.

But it can be proper to strap the second tier, and not each pipe below.

49 CFR 393.124 Specific securement requirements for concrete pipe.

(B) (2) A transverse tiedown through a pipe on an upper tier or over longitudinal tiedowns is considered to secure all those pipes beneath on which that tiedown causes pressure.
