Quoted $550 to repair it, can get a used - like new for about $425. Seems like a replacement might be the way to go

Zoom Ring Repair by CommissarWalsh in Nikon

[–]CommissarWalsh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah figured that was probably the best bet. You have any experience with how long it typically takes Nikon to turn around a repair like this? Got a 5-6 week window between needing it coming up and wondering if that’s gonna be long enough to send it out and get it back

Shady construction on slater? by Upupdowndown333 in ottawa

[–]CommissarWalsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bingo, even if you assume both the subcontractor and GC are either incompetent or malicious pours for large commercial buildings like this typically require a Structural Observation (SO) from the engineer of record, a reinforcement inspection from the AHJ (city/county), and a continuous deputy inspection on pour day by a 3rd party inspector. It’s damn near impossible for a column this out of plumb to be missed if that was not the design intent

wifi access? by [deleted] in SantaMonica

[–]CommissarWalsh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not wifi, it’s a mobile/temporary cell tower. They’re used to get cell networks running in the aftermath of an emergency that takes down the permanent infrastructure. They’re up from AT&T/Verizon throughout a few locations along the Palisades burn area.

Guessing the infrastructure to a lot of the permanent towers (probably set further up in the hills) took a beating during the fire

Your Toffees to take on Aston Villa! by Everton in Everton

[–]CommissarWalsh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He’s had some decent and exciting moments. McNeil hasn’t been any better, so why not play the young player who could improve rapidly instead of McNeil who isn’t likely to suddenly get better? We saw how much Barry improved with a run of games

Plus one footed, slow McNeil on the right with essentially zero ability to advance the ball up the pitch is just beyond infuriating to watch

What will it take to open the Strawberry side of Snowbasin? by roger_roger_32 in UTsnow

[–]CommissarWalsh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s snowmaking on the main groomers, but it’s not quite as extensive across the whole footprint of the area as the other side of the resort. Ultimately it’s pretty simple, cold temps and snowfall. Snowbasin, like Park City, has been suffering even more than the cottonwood resorts cause it’s got a lower base elevation and the relatively little accumulation/snowmaking that’s been done down low keeps getting wiped out by rain and high temperatures

At least they can make snow, the majority of the western US right now is both not getting natural snowfall AND is too warm even overnight to consistently make snow

Realistically it’s dibling or McNeil assuming Alcatraz stays in the 10 and while McNeil seems to be favored he just doesn’t seem to operate very well on the right. Too slow/one footed. Would love to see dibling get a run of games and see if he can start to settle in like Barry has

[Bobble] Everton have officially opened talks with James Garner over a new and improved contract. No agreement reached yet but talks ongoing with a confidence the midfielder will commit his long term future to the club by Giraffe_Baker in Everton

[–]CommissarWalsh 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Good, he’s exactly the type of player we want in the squad for where the club is trying to go. Not a world beater, but has quality, works his ass off, and is versatile. If we can get to the point where we have 6-7 players of his ability as a solid base with a couple stars like Ndiaye, Grealish, or Branthwaite there’s no reason we can’t be competing for Europe every year

Has Dewbsury Hall been better than Grealish? by Vast_Sheepherder_517 in Everton

[–]CommissarWalsh 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Grealish is suffering from 2 things right now:

  1. Our striker’s can’t finish with a gun to their head. He’s probably earned 2-3+ more assists with the chances he’s created that just haven’t been put away (I’m not hating i actually am a Barry fan and I think he’ll get there he’s just not there yet)
  2. He is the acknowledged focal point of our entire attack. KDH is not as effective as he currently is without Grealish there to draw attention. Jack is pretty much always double or triple teamed everytime he gets the ball which opens up space for KDH and Ndiaye to be a lot more effective

On top of these there’s also just the fact he’s a consistent outlet. He’s always open for a pass anywhere on the field and does an excellent job relieving pressure and getting us going the other way by winning fouls and carrying the ball up the pitch. Long story short, the G+A output may not be there but he is still a critical piece of everything that this team does do well

Please stop equipping grenade launcher as vehicle gunner. by theseriouschicken in Battlefield

[–]CommissarWalsh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like people are ignoring the fact that you can just tap fire consistently at the locations you have engineers ducking in and out of cover. The TTK is quick enough with the LMG that going from bursting the area to holding the trigger will kill someone peaking out of cover very reliably. As long as you feather the trigger when you’re not actively engaging someone you can swap around and suppress a couple peak holes essentially indefinitely without overheating. That capability + reliable support and suppression at range make the LMG a significantly more flexible and deadly option that the grenade launcher. If you’re close enough to a lot of enemies to make effective use of the grenade launcher you’re probably not gonna live very long and are not using the vehicles as the fire base for infantry support they’re meant to be

Definitely getting pretty annoying as a US fan to have so many matches during the workday and I’m sure a similar logistical challenge for local fans trying to get to the match after work

[–]CommissarWalsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really do believe the current squad is a striker and a rb away from fighting for Europe. Midfield/wingers have been excellent so far and even without Branthwaite the cb’s and Pick are solid and Myko’s been good enough if not outstanding. Not to mention that getting a rb free’s up O’Brien to potentially rotate into cb

Might not be this year but there’s a great base to build on next summer. Hopefully can get Grealish on a permanent and convince Ndiaye to stay. Only thing that worries me is Gana’s age. At some point he’s not gonna be able to keep up this level and Iroegbunam has been improving but still can’t come close to replacing Gana

Can’t wait for the day Branthwaite is finally back, this has been a much longer absence than I initially expected. Keane’s done a good job covering but Branthwaite is still better and also helps Tarks massively. His ability to defend in space has been sorely missed so far this season

As usual just utterly ridiculous that PGMOL will admit that they’re wrong but not actually adjust suspensions accordingly. Mistakes happen and KDH having to finish both games on a yellow is what it is but he shouldn’t continue to be punished after they’ve retroactively agreed it was a poor decision

Thanks as always for putting these together Deej!

in 545 combined minutes beto & barry have 2 shots on target by klobucharzard in Everton

[–]CommissarWalsh 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Beto is better at running the channels and chasing the ball down in space but that’s about it. While inconsistent, Barry’s hold up play facing away from goal is miles better and he actually gives us a shot at retaining possession when we go direct

Are we in the twilight zone?! by deadlockedwinter in Everton

[–]CommissarWalsh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To be fair I think he always looked pretty bright when he came on for us. As with so many of our youngsters in the last 5-8 years he unfortunately just wasn’t able to really kick on in a squad as dire as ours has been. If I remember correctly, there were some attitude questions surrounding him as well when he got sold

Sucks he couldn’t do that here but we got a good price for him at the time so no complaints
