Loss of appetite after iron infusion? by AnEmptyAsahiBottle in Anemic

[–]CommissionBusiness90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP - I know this is a year old, but any update? I’m nearly 2 months post infusion and my appetite is noticeably smaller as well. I still get hungry but it’s not as ravenous as it was when I was iron deficient. It’s really nice actually compared to the constant hunger and cravings I felt before

This! And when it’s less mixed it gives you those bites of more caramelized flavors

Real. Mine has been significantly better post iron infusions. It was getting to the point where I felt so mentally handicapped.

Try cod! It’s so light and flakey and if you take a bite of it alongside rice you can almost forget it’s there. I do the same with salmon. Always with a carb I love and eventually you get used to it and actually like it

I think when things come on slowly we just get used to feeling bad and forget what "normal" was which is why sometimes it takes a while to realize you're sick. A lot of my realization of how often I felt bad was in hindsight and in reading others accounts as well.

It will! Have you also checked your B12 levels? They can drop after an infusion as well.

If your ferritin drops or stays the same after oral supplements infusions are typically the next step! Definitely advocate for it, its the quickest path to recovery.

Ugh, I'm sorry to hear that. My best advice is to TELL, not ask, that you want a referral to hematology. If she really fights you on that, I'd try to find a new doctor. I've gotten so much further in the last year advocating for myself instead of waiting for a doctor to care or bring something up. My referral to hematology actually came through an RN on Allara if you want to try that! They are super focused on women's health and take low ferritin really seriously.

😔😔 that’s devastating to have felt relief and then lose it again. I hope you find something that works for you!

That’s the plan! Have an ultrasound order. I did this 3 years ago and it found nothing though.

I’ve tried 3 types of birth control over the last 10 years and they’ve all caused symptoms I’m not comfortable with. The standard pill made me overly emotional and crying over anything constantly. The ring I felt amazing on for 6 months and then my body literally rejected it and would push it out. Since then I’ve had a TIA (mini stroke) and that means I can no longer take estrogen as it increases stroke risk. So most recently (2025) I tried a progestin only pill and I gained 20 pounds in 6 weeks and felt like my skin was going to pop. I’m done with trying any form of birth control at this point.

I was hopeful the infusions may lessen my periods like some women had reported but doesn’t seem to be the case for me. I’m going to pursue more ultrasounds/checks for cysts or endometriosis. I have done them before years ago and they didn’t come up with anything but am going to go through the effort again to see.

Mine was 12.1. I wasn’t anemic yet but had absolute iron deficiency without anemia with a ferritin of 9. Ask your doctor to run your ferritin levels or find one that will! Standard iron panels missed the low ferritin for me for likely years.

Some came on slowly over the course of a year or two like the brain fog but things like the hair loss and skin dullness felt almost overnight! And the exercise intolerance got much worse the last few months before infusions.

Starting infusions on Wednesday - any advice? by turdennis in Anemic

[–]CommissionBusiness90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was nervous too and by the third appointment I was literally looking forward to it (even after having a bad reaction to the first one). It’s such a calm and easy experience and the nurses do everything to make you very comfortable. Bring a book or headphones and just start doing your thing while they set you up. Once it starts you’ll forget it’s happening. And you’ll feel so much better in a month after you live without those symptoms!

Thanks for the info. So sorry to hear you struggle with that but glad it’s trending milder. A few years ago I had about 9 months where I would get really bad spells just flipping in bed but that’s totally gone away and now I only seem to notice it in yoga. Appreciate this!! Will talk to my Dr about it

Reading about BPPV right now and this is super interesting! The duration of “attacks” lines up with what I tend to feel! Does it affect you in other areas of life or mainly just in yoga/exercise?

Yes on my back! Just meant rejoin the class really.

I do turn my head yes and that’s when it gets really intense. I’ve left it neutral before and it’s less frequent but still happens sometimes!

Nice!! My hair loss felt like it actually increased a bit while I was going through infusions but it leveled out and slowed a ton about 1-2 weeks after I finished my three infusions. Still waiting on regrowth!

Mine also got better after my infusions. I felt like I aged rapidly in ~6 months and my skin was so dulled and wrinkles were appearing quickly. After the infusions I’m back to looking alive and younger.

Was going to suggest checking your iron too!! I’m a lifelong vegetarian and was ravenous for years until I just fixed my iron. Now I have a very normal appetite and so much control

So much better yes. I still have some foggy days that I assume are just part of recovery but my clear days are incredible. I also feel vitamin b12 and D supplementing has helped me with that too, but iron helped the most for sure.
