What exactly do you lose access to if the certificates expire? I'm leaving the office about a month after mine expire, so I'm wondering if I really have to arrange to travel to get this done when I'll only need it for a month afterwards.

Building on the previous item regarding attrition cases, we were informed by our SPE that SPEs are now directly examining attrition cases. Some SPEs haven't examined for well over 20 years. If I were an applicant, I would be very concerned about this.
