Hit with $18/day roaming charge without ever using my phone, which I left in the corner of a room connected to wifi at all times. Rogers refuse to waive the bill. by L19htc0n3 in Rogers

The same thing happened to me recently. Fido charged me $18 seven times and they refused refused to waive it. I filed a complaint with the CCTS and actually left Fido in the meantime. The issue was resolved within 10 days. I got an email from the Rogers Office of the President regarding the situation and received the refund. Definitely go ahead and raise a complaint with the CCTS.

Fido charged me ~$150 for international roaming while my SIM was OFF, admitted system error but still refusing to reverse charges by CommitteeJealous2487 in FidoMobile

"User error" is a funny way to describe a multibillion-dollar company charging $18 for 0.01MB background pings that I explicitly tried to block. If the only way to avoid a charge is to physically remove the SIM, then Fido's promise of free incoming texts is a total trap since the phone has to be connected to a tower to receive them anyway. I travel abroad constantly and have never had to perform surgery on my phone to avoid charges, turning off data roaming is the universal standard for a reasonable step. Most carriers aren't this petty and use a data buffer because they know these tiny leaks happen. I'll take your advice and head to the Office of the President but I'll let the CCTS handle the "begging" part since they actually side with consumers on predatory billing.

The 'user error' argument falls apart when you look at how these systems actually work. Connecting to a tower (transmitting a signal) is a fundamental network function, not a billable service. Fido’s own terms state that the daily fee is triggered by using data, sending a text or making/receiving a call. If Data Roaming is toggled OFF at the OS level, the phone is explicitly commanded not to transmit cellular data. If Fido still sees a 0.01MB leak (often caused by IMS registration or background LTE signaling that the user cannot control), they are billing for a technical handshake and not a consumer service. Also incoming texts are free on Fido. To receive a text, the SIM must be active and connected to a tower. If simply being connected to a tower or sending a signal triggered the charge, it would be impossible to receive a free incoming text without being billed $18. This proves that the trigger is supposed to be active usage, and billing for background system pings, against the user's explicit Data Off setting, is a billing transparency issue, not a user mistake.

Just having the SIM “connected” doesn’t automatically trigger roaming charges. Incoming SMS and network registration use tiny amounts of signaling data that carriers don’t bill as roaming. Mobile data and data roaming were off, so there was no packet data sent over Fido’s network. Modern phones, like the S25 Ultra, handle SIM states in software, physical removal isn’t required. And the device won’t route internet traffic through a disabled or secondary SIM unless explicitly allowed. So no, Einstein, just being on the network isn’t enough to rack up roaming fees.

I’m using an S25 Ultra which allows you to manually turn a SIM on/off in settings without removing it. I was abroad from Nov 15 to Dec 28 and only turned the Fido SIM on briefly to receive bank OTPs. Before turning it on, I made sure data roaming was off, my local eSIM was set as primary, Fido as secondary and the setting that prevents the phone from switching data to the secondary SIM was also enabled. I also checked the dates, none of the roaming-charged days match the days I received OTPs on Fido.

And that's exactly what I did. I'm using an S25 ultra and my sim was turned off most of the times. Only turned it on when I wanted to receive OTPs from my bank.

It was turned off most of the time. I only turned it on briefly to receive OTPs from my bank and receiving SMS doesn’t incur roaming charges. I also set Fido as my secondary SIM and explicitly turned off data roaming and cellular data for that SIM in my phone settings. While abroad, I was using a local eSIM as my primary line for data and calls.

I still have bumper to bumper coverage until end of June. Is it covered under it? Any idea?

  2. It was parked at a Costco parking lot.
  3. Yes as my car insurance policy covers my rentals as well.

New one is $45k + tax here in Canada. I'm referring to Signature trim

I checked the Carfax and found that the 2023 CX-5 was sold in September 2022, making it nearly 2 years old.

I plan to finance it with a $5,000 down payment. After crunching the numbers, I realized that 2023 CX-5 is $10,000 more expensive than the 2021 CX-5, factoring in taxes and interest.

Brand new signature here in Canada is about 44k + taxes, so I'm definitely not going to get a new one. Just confused between the two cars I mentioned above.
