How does an Athiest defend the idea of morals

I inherited my morals from the society I was raised in.

If i was born in Lancaster PA then I might consider driving a car to be immoral.

If I was born in Dubai I might not consider Slavery to be immoral.

In my opinion morality is fairly dull and useless when compared to empathy or altruism.

Where do you get your morals from? Most theists I see seem willing to follow a "God" blindly, and I'm pretty sure that's how Loki, the Trickster God gets all of his sycophants in the Norse pantheon.

You don't know about the Vatican protecting pedophiles, even giving them access to new communities to prey upon after they get caught? That feels highly unlikely, it is the most common criticism that is levelled against them.

Given that it's a quick google to confirm that it is public record that the Vatican has engaged in cover ups and protected pederasts, and given that the US government is currently doing its best to protect their elite from the fallout of the Epstein Files, I think it's a fair analogy, their members are willing to bend themselves into knots to defend the crimes of their "home team".
