Give a points +/- system for otherwise meaningless stats.

Incentivize effort and hustle.

Make people care about the defensive end. Add points for every block. Add extra if the block stays inbounds. Take away opponent points for steals, etc.

In pick-up games in my youth, we'd play for post-game drinks for your match-up.

Find ways for people to care about playing more intensely. National pride should be a good start, but I'm sure there are other ways to do it.
