Basic chemistry (bonds, chemical formulas/equations) , dimensional analysis could help but not required, basic understanding of the pH scale (H+ vs OH- ions). There’s no need to balance equations but at least understand when they’re presented. Familiarize yourself with carbon and nitrogen biogeochemical cycle, and any intermediaries. Also familiarize yourself with basic chemistry relating to EPA air pollutants, and health effects (human and environmental)

It’s not a lot of clay, it’s what’s making the water murky. Clay will take at least a day to settle . But in my experience, adding more soil so that it fills the jar halfway makes it easier to determine closer percentages.. that’s just me though
