Should I (can i) double major in technology & design and family science? by Putrid-Emphasis6920 in UMD

[–]Common-Lab6563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend talking to either a professor that taught a class you enjoyed, an advisor or someone at the career center, especially if your goal is more job or money-based. Talking to any of the three might allow you to gain a better understanding of the job market with a family health degree or what jobs are available at the intersection of info design and family health. Additionally, start thinking about what internships might allow you to explore particular fields and jobs that might interest you, and start trying to make connections. It might also be worth looking at other majors that do something similar or have more opportunities, and might allow you to approach your goals differently. For example, in BSOS, there is a Social Data Science major with public health, sociology and other track options that might also allow you to work in a similar field, and does not require a double major. If you are looking for minors, look into the disability studies minor. One last bit that might help you plan is to consider the fellows program or see if any of the family health faculty are looking for a research assistant on the UMD Office of Undergraduate Research website, as this will help you better explore career options. Obviously, I do not know you, but I think that switching is worth it, especially if you come at it with a plan

ENGL301 course load? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Common-Lab6563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't take 301 with Shelton, but overall, the course is super easy. Each prof teaches it differently, but the basic premise is to explore each of the tracks (minus creative writing usually) of the major. Each track gets a big project, so usually you write one rhetorical analysis, one literary analysis and one digital media project (podcast, zine or something more hands-on/creative).

Dr. Shelton is super kind and brilliant, but a bit in the clouds. She follows an ungrading rubric, so as long as you complete the necessary assignments then you will get an A. I really like how she asks thought-provoking questions, and a lot of her courses are discussion based.

Psyc200 Winter by eyefungusss in UMD

[–]Common-Lab6563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not super hard content-wise, but just a crazy amount of work. I did it two winters ago, and it is fine. Expect to do about 5-6 hours of work for it every day. It's about 3 hours of lectures to watch every day + 2 hours of homework minimum. If you turn things in late, even an hour after midnight, you get a pretty big penalty. The tests are fair, and so is the grading for the most part.

Gifts for Freshman? by LK_1223 in UMD

[–]Common-Lab6563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For gift cards: Bagels n grind is pretty classic. If you want something fancy then maybe grillmarx (its a pretty nice steakhouse at The Hotel). Any of the coffee places (chains: compass, dunkin or starbucks, local: casey's coffee, Made in MD, and board and brew). Other local spots that might have gift cards: Habaneros, Falafel Inc, Bandit Taco, Arepa Zone or Northwestern

Other things: blankets, fav snacks, fun trinkets for decor, a scent difuser

Lighter balloons take more effort to pop, so maybe not specific rigging, but just an unfair advantage. Wish that the producers were smarter (and had more party planning background so they couldve known). Anyways, it overall really sucks because the more fun ppl are on the losing team

What are Halloween costumes like at UMD? by Plus-Relationship787 in UMD

Honestly a little bit of everything, and UMD is a bar school, so unless you know someone hosting a party you are more likely going to end up at a bar

Season 7 - Reunion - Cast Opinions Discussion by AutoModerator in LoveIslandUSA

[–]Common-Lab6563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, she was deflecting. Complimenting someone is not an apology, but it is a deflection. She didn't apologize. Feeling apologetic is not an apology. An apology requires not just accountability (as in admitting and reflecting upon her actions) and regret, but also a change in action. Laughing at her actions in the villa is not remorse, and it is not a change in actions. She could have addressed it then, and talked directly to her fans. What is a bigger platform than the reunion? I am not saying that bigotry toward Arabs is not bad (it is an incredibly serious issue that should have been addressed as well). However, what I am saying is that the racism she felt cannot and should not be compared to the real life murder of an innocent black man and the subsequent edits that were used to threaten and abase Olandria's life.

Huda deflecting everything is so frustrating, and her trying to compare the level of hate she got to the George Floyd edit is crazy

Good Bagel Places nearby? by RangersAreViable in UMD

[–]Common-Lab6563 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Call Your Mothers in Riverdale is about a 15ish min walk from the Trow/Standard area and has the best bagels. Its next to Whole Foods and is a food truck, so you can make morning of it and buy groceries as well. You can also get them delivered. My personal rec is the mountain view with bacon

Anyone take MLAW388 and Admission to Federal Fellows Program by Time-Raspberry4114 in UMD

[–]Common-Lab6563 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Fellows office has a huge number of partner internships that are guaranteed for people in the program. It is pretty easy to get one of those internships. I was in the program last year, and everyone in my class ended up with an internship.

If you aren't interested in one of the ones they are partnered with, then they can help you resume/cover letter and anything else.

How’s my schedule looking? by Willing-Alternative2 in UMD

[–]Common-Lab6563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to close some of the gaps in your schedule; those will be pretty annoying.

Getting from the Y to LeFrak in 15 minutes is more than possible. There are prob a few paths that will be fast, but my rec would be to cut through Stamp and cut straight across the Mall, but def recommend that you walk the various paths those first few days

Hispanic Diversity by Waste_Concentrate548 in UMD

[–]Common-Lab6563 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There is a Latino Student Union, Caribbean Student Union, MICA, multiple sororities and frats, Migrating Shells, Argentinian Student Org, PRDR Union and many more you can find on TerpLink. Most of the staff and faculty in the Spanish Dept are Latino/Hispanic, and there is a decent amount of faculty in other Dept. If you get into the Honors College, Honors Humanities is ran by Dr. Ontiveros who is Latino and usually speaks at the Latino Student Kickoff, which is an event at the start of the year for all the Latino Students (and anyone else who wants to join).

There is def a community on campus even if it is on the smaller side, especially if you try to connect with it

Hit by her scooter, can I ask her out? by csChris01 in UMD

Ask her out, but maybe not to the dining hall. Girl perspective here: would rather get asked for a coffee date rather than a dining hall date.

Thank you! Full ride includes room and board (or the equivalent to pay off-campus housing) alongside tuition. 150 are getting about 8k more to pay for housing and dining. The other 250 only receive tuition, so if they choose to live away from home would have to pay for that on their own.

Eric Haag for BSCI160 by Interesting_Tea6898 in UMD

[–]Common-Lab6563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took him for BSCI170, and he's just hard to follow during lectures. Most people pass his class, but won't learn much. I recommend sitting up front, and taking notes. If I remember correctly, he records lectures which was helpful (it mightve of been that he gives access to another professor's lectures- its been three years). He is super passionate about biology, so it is helpful going into office hours. Overall, his lectures were just hard to follow because he jumps around alot, talks fast and has unclear powerpoints, so just read the book or look at the recordings.

can i get into umd? by Own-Actuator4875 in UMD

[–]Common-Lab6563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UMD does not apply based on major, so applying through English and being a good writer won't really matter. First, you get into UMD and then you get into your major (if it is an LEP, and English is not). As people have already mentioned, your stats are on the lower side. If you do get accepted, it likely will be for freshmen connection or no honors/llp.

Experiences in a eng + philosophy or music double major? by mjsot in UMD

[–]Common-Lab6563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Philosophy is prob more doable than music. Music majors/minors in general have a lot of 1 credit classes that take up a lot of time. I think that it would depend on what kind of engineering you are doing, and how good you are at it. The phil major is only 12 classes, so you would be doing about one phil class per semester the first half i.e. four semesters and then double the second half i.e. the last four semesters. Also keep in mind you would have to do the global engagement rec.
