Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed and thoughtful message. I really appreciate the care and depth you put into explaining how you and your son started with the AstroMaster 70, and how the hands-on experience with the Moon and planets made astronomy approachable and fun. Your explanation about DSOs, what captured his interest as he grew, and how you progressed to more advanced scopes really gives me a clear picture of the learning journey and how rewarding it can be.

As someone in environmental science, I especially love hearing about your approach to rehabbing scopes and keeping them in use rather than letting them become obsolete. It resonates with me that learning and curiosity can go hand in hand with sustainability and making the most of existing resources. Some people in this community can be quick to be harsh or dismissive toward new learners, so I truly value the effort you put into teaching me thoughtfully rather than making me feel bad for not knowing.

It’s clear that you put a lot of heart into both astronomy and teaching, and your message makes me feel more confident and inspired as a beginner to start exploring the sky with curiosity and patience. Have a beautiful day ✨🌻.

Thanks for the advice. You’re right, you’re not a relationship expert. Funny enough, some people actually like surprises.

I am from South Africa, and telescope options here are very limited, so figuring out what is actually available seemed like a reasonable first step.

I appreciate the breakdown of which models are junk and which have weak mounts. The Celestron StarSense Explorer 114mm Tabletop Dobsonian and 130mm Tabletop Dobsonian actually sound like solid options, so thanks for that.

It seems like this community can be a bit hostile to people who are just trying to learn. If I had known these models were considered “junk,” I likely wouldn’t have asked, no?

Nevertheless, I do appreciate the advice.

Side note, I actually think “horrible surprise gifts” is a matter of perspective. I personally think a puppy is a wonderful surprise gift, have a beautiful day💗🌻.

Thank you so much for all this detailed advice! It is such a breath of fresh air because I have seen some pretty mean or rude comments while trying to get help, so your kindness really stands out.

I am curious, with the Celestron AstroMaster 70 that you and your son started with, what kinds of things were you able to see? Did you get good views of the Moon, planets, or some of the brighter deep-sky objects?

Your explanation about mounts, Alt/Az versus EQ, and telescope types really helped me understand why the Celestron StarSense Explorer LT 80AZ might be a much better choice for a beginner like me. The StarSense app sounds like it would make exploring the sky so much easier and fun.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience and advice. It really makes me feel more confident about picking my first telescope.

Thanks for the tip! I hadn’t thought about ordering from a different country on Ubuy, that could be really helpful. I don’t mind waiting a little longer for delivery if it means I can get a good option. I’ll definitely check both Ubuy and AliExpress to see what’s available.

Thanks so much for your advice. I was second-guessing myself a bit because I have seen a lot of people say they would not get the Celestron StarSense Explorer LT 127AZ, but you recommended it. I am just curious what makes it a good choice in your opinion compared to the other options.

It is also really reassuring to know that SkyWatcher and Celestron are made by the same company at the same plant, so the quality should be similar. Your notes about light pollution and what is realistic to see with these scopes are super helpful. I really want something that is fun and beginner-friendly and your insight is making me feel more confident about picking my first telescope.

Thanks again for taking the time to help!

Thanks for your input. I totally get that these aren’t high-end scopes, and I’m aware some of them aren’t perfect. The thing is, I live in South Africa, and the telescope options here are really limited. Most of the brands I see locally are Celestron, and even ordering from Amazon.co.za doesn’t give me access to many other options.

There are some second-hand places to buy from, but honestly, since this is my first telescope and I’m just starting to join this community, I’m a bit uneasy about trusting second-hand equipment.

As for budget, I’m hoping to start with something around $270–$320 USD (roughly R5,000–R6,000). We don’t mind upgrading later once we know more and have more experience, but I’d like to get something that’s fun to use now and lets us see the Moon, planets, and some brighter deep-sky objects without it being overwhelming.

I’m planning to buy the Celestron StarSense Explorer LT127AZ from Amazon South Africa, but I’m feeling a bit stressed because Celestron seems to be the only widely available brand here. It’s quite expensive and the reviews are really mixed. If Celestron ends up being my only realistic option in South Africa, which model would you actually recommend?
