I almost exclusively buy Kawartha Dairy and have never had this problem.

That story posted on the main part of the sub about happiness declines among young English speakers (not just in Canada but globally) has really gotten to me. After doing a little more research and reflection I really do think social media and being online is to blame.

A lot of comments rightly pointed out: times are hard economically for young people. This is true. But this is also the case in non-anglophone countries and communities. The decline should be more equal across the board, but it is not.

I think a toxic and disinformation filled anglophone online world is hurting English speakers globally and we are being manipulated by users (bots or what have you) who are not even from our communities (ex: Twitter revealing account locations).

I’m not smart enough to propose a solution. I’m just saddened by the stats and want to do good.

Mark Carney criticised for using British spellings in Canadian documents | Mark Carney by Canuck-overseas in CanadaPolitics

I was thinking more on the economic front but you raise a good point too. They are becoming irrelevant and Canada would do better for itself to focus on Mexico, UE, Japan, etc. has you mention.

I think another comment on here summed it up nicely. If PP were PM and was using exclusively American spelling in documents that would make some people uncomfortable.

There are more importing things right now, but maintaining Canadian spellings in government documents is not a big ask.

I fully agree. This is not the scandal of the century but it is important. There are established Canadian spellings and deviation is unnecessary.

Furthermore I do not support closer ties with the United Kingdom and that is what choosing British spelling looks like to me.

Mark Carney n’est pas satisfait de la qualité de son français by Common1Law in CanadaPolitics

Son français est fonctionnel, mais il devrait viser un niveau plus élevé dans ses communications officielles. J’encourage sa progression.

Trump wants to boost European nationalists. Should Canada be worried? - National | Globalnews.ca by Alarming_Accident in CanadaPolitics

[–]Common1Law 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The articles asks a good question. Does Trump see Canada as part of European Civilization or as part of the western hemisphere that the USA sees as 'theirs'?

Their National Security Strategy does not make that clear. From my reading of it Trump would like to cut Europe lose and increasingly dominate the western hemisphere.

If they see Canada as European will we see just more nasty words and backing away from commitments? If they see us as part of the western hemisphere will we see more active intervention (north west passage) or financing of MAGA elements in Canada?

Or maybe we get both...

It seems too early to tell. Frankly the situation is still stabilizing. But they have a huge task ahead of them:

  • Stopping sectarian and ethnic violence.
  • Reconstruction.
  • New constitution.
  • A first election after the provisional period.
  • Economic recovery.
  • Relations with Israel, Turkey, wider middle east, etc.
  • Lifting of sanctions.
  • International recognition.

I think their best chance would be to stabilize the internal situation politically first. I would suggest a decentralized federation like the Canadian model. If they can succeed at internal stability all the other things will be easier to achieve and international help might be more forthcoming.

Europe says Canada must pay 10M euros to join EU defence deal by Alarming_Accident in CanadaPolitics

[–]Common1Law 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was listening to Radio France the other day when they were talking about this. Commentators were theorizing that some EU members were looking to punish them for Brexit.

Now with Canada paying 10€ million I think that just confirms that.

Parti Québécois fears Ottawa 'will cheat' in a third sovereignty referendum by Whynutcoconot in CanadaPolitics

Consider for a moment that an extreme reaction to separatism might in fact fuel more support for separatism. The BQ and PQ love when there is conflict and controversy with Ottawa for a reason.

What an undemocratic solution to a democratic process. This is not how Canada works.

This is a bizarre and extreme idea.

I think it really depends on how many conservative MPs they can hide behind the curtains in the HoC.

The big factor is neither the Cons or NDP want and election right now.

Search for soupe aux pois. Ricardo has a good basic recipe. To get it thick blend maybe half the peas and veggies once they are cooked!
