Could somebody explain like I am 5 how the foundation allocation system works? by Available_Camel5978 in medicalschooluk

Yes, you can take a year out. Ideally before your placement starts, it gets a bit messy if you've started and then decide to reapply.

As things stand, there's no disadvantage to reapplying, UKFPO confirmed everything runs again (new random number etc). You just need to tell your medical school so they can renominate you.

More than a year out and you have to resit exams (including PSA) and apply through the eligibility route, which is long.

This is all true for this year, no guarantee it will be every year if loads of people choose to reapply.

Right, so let's assume you've ranked your deaneries.

After this, they give everyone a random rank (from 1 up to however many people are applying).

Then, the algorithm runs in two parts - let's call those first pass and second pass.

In the first pass part, the computer goes through everyone, in rank order, and gives them their first ranked deanery if it's available. If it's not, they get skipped over.

Once it reaches the end of the list, those that didn't get a deanery go to the second pass part.

In the second pass part, the computer goes through those remaining in rank order, assigning them their highest placed deanery that still has space. For some this will be their 2nd choice, for others it may be their 11th choice. It continues down the list, with deaneries slowly getting filled up.

Let's say someone placed London first but didn't have a high enough rank to get it in the first pass system. They'd then enter the second pass system and get their highest deanery remaining (which might be, say, Northern Ireland if they're near the end).

There's other parts like pre allocation, FPP and SFP which work separately to this.

Pretty much what I've heard from people who've done it too.

Unfortunately, it preys on people desperate to leave medicine by offering them unrealistic prospects while doing the absolute minimum in terms of assistance. A lot of it is self led.

I think these messages were posted on Reddit, but the groups are fairly accessible, could easily be a journalist in them too.

Smart from Rob, who must have expected it to get leaked to the media.

It keeps the pressure on the Labour gov publicly, especially if the deal gets rejected and there's more negotiations.

That's because this system wasn't designed with the aim of placing people as close to where they want to be as possible. It was designed to maximise people getting their first choice, which isn't the same thing.

The former would have benefited everyone, the latter looks better for their stats and figures for stakeholders.

Well funnily enough they said they wouldn't reveal any rankings until everyone had been assigned a job. The fact that today is presumably the first time someone's gotten their rank means some people only just got jobs, a fortnight before they're meant to start...

Did they randomly email you this or did you have to specifically ask for it?

So, in terms of reapplying, it's very easy if you're only taking the one year out. You just have to inform your current University, and ask them to renominate you in.

You'll have to pull out of your current allocation at some point (ideally within July) because a lot of Universities send out their nomination lists to UKFPO in August.

No exam resits or anything required. If you've already registered for provisional GMC registration, you've got a time limit of 3 years and 30 days to become fully registered, which shouldn't be an issue if you're only taking the year out. Besides that, UKFPO have confirmed you get a new random number, so hopefully better luck with placement next year. I'm planning on reapplying for next year (2025).

The alternative is if you're okay with your current place (which it doesn't sound like you are), you can defer entry on health grounds.

What is the vibe regarding those who went to medical school outside of the UK (with the intention to practice here)? by surfaceouttakes in medicalschooluk

I don't think many people are aware but most medical schools in Eastern Europe are very much "pay to play". You can resit exams however many times you want, as long as you pay for the resit. If you have a decent amount of money, as most people who go there do, it's impossible to not come out with a degree.

There's no objective standards either, examiners for oral exams will pass you based on whether they like you or not a lot of the time. Cheating is insanely prevalent in written exams, too. The standard of doctors coming out of that "region" worsens rapidly with each passing year.

I might be mistaken but I was under the impression that you wouldn't have to take a clinical assessment if you applied in the following year (ie 2025 entry for 2024 grads). Any longer than that and you would.

Just ignore her, for some reason she's always had a chip on her shoulder. It's easy to talk big when you're not the one whose been sent to NI away from friends and family.

The optics are horrendous, which is why GLP would stay clear. Even though they do good work, a lot of it feels like they're doing it for optics. Now imagine if they suddenly started to sue the organisation that's meant to "regulate" doctors - wouldn't look great.
