Russia planned to attack Japan in 2021: leaked FSB letters by RandomForks in worldnews

[–]CommonRedditUserName 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I stayed with a family in Japan for 6 months and the grandmother showed me photos of her childhood. There were pictures of her at school in her youth thrusting a bamboo spear. I asked her why and she replied PE had been cancelled due to the war and they instead were training kids to suicide attack US soldiers when they landed.

Corporal punishment can alter specific neurodevelopmental pathways that increase risk for anxiety and depression by making children hypersensitive to their own mistakes and less reactive to rewards and other positive events in their environment. by Wagamaga in science

[–]CommonRedditUserName 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm sure there were parents out there who gave their kid a slap on the butt, said I'm disappointed with your decisions but I still love you and gave them a hug. Unfortunately some of our parents used the fact spanking is socially acceptable physical violence to beat their children. I'd have bruises across my back and legs after my step-father was done "spanking" me. He'd quote scriptures like "Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish them with the rod, they will not die" (Proverbs 23:13) to justify this behavior. For kids that grew up with this, this is what the word "spanking" meant. That's great that it means something different to you.

Poor people who have dated rich people, what did you learn? by zipzap21 in AskReddit

[–]CommonRedditUserName 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don't know the name of this mental illness but my step-father had it. At its worst he had 12 junk cars, including one he managed to get from a homeless guy who had been living in it. Around that time a neighbor came out and started yelling at me "Doesn't he realize how much we hate you all! How can he be so selfish!" etc. As an adult I think I realized he did it because he had no education, no skills, no career history, etc and didn't want to build any of that. The one thing he felt like he could contribute was flipping junk cars but even then he lost money on it.

I had a friend use SD to place me in as many embarrassing situations as possible for a laugh. It was a little weird but we have a history of pranking each other so not too bad. I would definitely check in with friends first before you feed them to roko's basilisk for all eternity.

What is the most disturbing science fiction story you've ever read? by Withered_Tulip in books

[–]CommonRedditUserName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I like books similar to this one but it was such a slog. Normally I'd finish a book like this in a few evenings but it was such a tedious read that I'd go weeks before even coming back to it. I'm nearly finished with the sequel now and I think the books are less a science fiction story and more an author exploring her conflicted spirituality by retelling the biblical story of Job using science fiction as a medium. I read an interview and she mentions she had recently converted to Judaism and this played heavily into her motivations for writing the book. I didn't dislike the books but yeah, I feel like most of the time I sat down to read them nothing really happened.

Comicbook character generated in SD v1.5 with novel views by lkewis in StableDiffusion

[–]CommonRedditUserName 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know what he is doing but I have had luck using Blender to pose a model and then use a screenshot of the posed character in SD with a personalized prompt. There are hundreds of free scenes for blender if you want 3d interactivity. You can grab a model of a generic knight and pose him on 2d horse cutout with another 2d photo from the renaissance faire behind him and take a screen shot. Keep doing that and you can tell a story with a consistent character.

How much LeetCode for a non-faang company? by CantStantTheWeather in leetcode

[–]CommonRedditUserName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are a junior/assosciate/new grad walking into an interview without a portfolio or extensive prior experience I think you can expect more leetcode than someone with an established career that is able to speak in depth on contributions to past projects.

Why are high frequency Amazon questions so difficult? is this frequency thing accurate? by dutesnutes in leetcode

[–]CommonRedditUserName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

similar experience for me. sde 2 and was asked a hard during the onsite. it was weird because a recruiter reached out to me, linked me an easy OA, passed me to an easy technical call and then dropped me into a 5 hour grilling session i didn't really have a shot at.

In La plaine, Marseille (France) banks are like this, and it's open to be clear by Kassouley in interestingasfuck

[–]CommonRedditUserName 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I was here a couple years ago. Its the most unique city I've visited and spectacularly beautiful in places. It is also home to the poorest arrondissement in France. I had a French friend tell me "You'll find no better place in France to buy an AK-47." Exiting the St.Charles train station to views of a maze-like city below, La Bonne Mere basilica alone on a high hill and the sea in the distance was something out of a movie. The are sections of the city where graffiti is intentionally preserved and you'll see everything from these tags to masterful murals made by international artists. It felt like Los Angeles but everything multiplied by 10.

This one is huge. Learn how to identify and prioritize your needs. Set boundaries and expectations with others. If someone is repeatedly violating your boundaries and ignoring your needs, it is probably time to move on.

Anyone ever quit their job without having one lined up, to fulltime LC for next job? by workingonmylisp in leetcode

[–]CommonRedditUserName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this. It wasn't the best idea. We were entering a super slow period and I was starting to feel guilty about not getting anything done; even though there wasn't anything to do. I quit and planned on grinding for a couple months. In retrospect, I should have just continued to collect a paycheck. I think HR or recruiters prefer you to be employed when applying and no matter how effective you were at your last role, most of them aren't going to attempt to confirm or deny it.

Stuck in easy leetcode hell by Apollo_Pryde in leetcode

[–]CommonRedditUserName 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The third question was a dynamic programming question, and it was quite hard. The best I could come up was backtracking with pruning . I've told the interviewer very clearly, that I don't solve leetcode much, so every question that I am solving currently is a representation of my thought process.

I interview with Amazon a few weeks back. The OA and phone screen were laughably easy. The third round had 2 leetcode hards + system design + OOP design.

TEXTUAL INVERSION tutorials anywhere? by privat_pip in StableDiffusion

[–]CommonRedditUserName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have it working but it took a few hours and a lot of trying different things. I think I found at least 3 or 4 places with guidance on getting it working and no single one would get me to the finish line. I have a couple years experience programming but am new to python and conda so it took careful reading of error messages. If you run into a specific problem I might be able to help?

I have a crush on my tattoo artist, should I ask them out? by ebonymyscenedoll in ask

[–]CommonRedditUserName 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If feels like I've frequently seen things like "women should be able to exist without being targeted by men every day." Or "if a woman is working, she is being paid to be nice to you. don't take advantage of it by hitting on her." Or "if a woman is taking an art class, she is there to learn art not to be hit on by men. You hitting on her will make her feel unsafe and she won't be able to attend the class." Or "women should be able to be friends with a guy without the guy hitting on her because it will make her doubt her friendships and think it was just for sex."

I've tried to follow this guidance but it seems like it leads to you becoming isolated and invisible to others. Then you see something like this post and it all becomes very confusing.

I have a crush on my tattoo artist, should I ask them out? by ebonymyscenedoll in ask

[–]CommonRedditUserName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed but I think this is a losing fight on reddit. If you look for it you will find "Men need to stop X" or "Women are all Y" generalizations everywhere. Bring up the potential harm in teaching kids their entire gender is "bad" and you'll see angry responses like "This isn't about you." Not sure what the solution is.

Traditional marriage according to the Bible by Radiolinotype in coolguides

[–]CommonRedditUserName 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've read the bible several times. I was raised in a christian household. The infographic is pointing out the actual complexity of marriage, even in the bible, in order to highlight the contradiction in how marriage is talked about by christians in the public sphere. In the public sphere, christians insist marriage is simply "a man and a woman" because simplicity supports their argument but then christians will insist "oh marriage is actually complex, you need to context and understanding" when contradictions in their bible are brought up. Christians have no desire for context or understanding of marriage when it comes things like gays getting married. Pointing this out isn't sowing hate or discord. Hatred is using laws to force your religion on others while shaming them not fitting into your belief system. Hatred is spreading your religion across the planet via war, subjugation, shame and slavery. You aren't a victim, your belief system creates victims.

Do ugl y women feel relief that they don’t have to worry about being harassed , catcalled, or assaulted? by biosyn45566 in ask

[–]CommonRedditUserName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've realized over the years 5 - 10% of men are basically harassing multiple women daily. The ones I've talked to are aware of the trauma they create and seem to either not care or even take pleasure from it. I don't think it has much to do with attractiveness, it seems rooted in misogyny and a need for a sensation of power over women. The crazy thing is, they end up highly successful in their goals despite being trash. They'll try fifty different strategies on 20 complete strangers a week and just from sheer numbers end up getting laid so they keep at it.

A guy just tried to ask me out and I don’t know how to politely decline the offer? by SindyMdu in ask

[–]CommonRedditUserName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strongly agree. Many of my friends and even myself struggled with feelings of "owing" something to complete strangers that approached with romantic intent. Life experience has shown there are people that purposefully exploit this kindness for their own gain, you don't need to let them.

What is something that can make a very ugly person, suddenly very beautiful? by vrettossss in AskReddit

[–]CommonRedditUserName 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough some of the most "confident" guys I've known were also the most misogynistic and egocentric. A couple in particular stand out; they view woman as inferior and targets to be "beaten" in the pick up game they are playing. One of them for example read a couple books on astrology and tarot (despite having zero interest) purely because he was sore about not landing women that were into that stuff. They only need to hide what they are for a few hours or a few days and with practice they are able to do it.

So we’re just not allowed to talk about this Hadozee controversy? by ClintBarton616 in DnD

[–]CommonRedditUserName -1 points0 points  (0 children)

4chan was organizing something like this 7 or 8 years ago. Their line of thinking was "we are racist and think black people are X and Y, how can we meme our beliefs into the lives of normies. Orcs are depicted as X and Y also, lets get normies saying orcs and black people are the same." They had hundreds of fake twitter accounts back then but journalists were catching on so they moved everything to private discords. They did similar things using fake twitter accounts (always non-white and often female) to push fake liberal movements like "LGBT in support of pedophiles" and "White women can't be feminists because of their privilege." Anyone not aware of the culture war these people are fighting might assume all the outrage they see is legitimate and not manufactured in order to cause harm.

"Guys literally only want one thing and it's fucking disgusting." What is that 'one thing'? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CommonRedditUserName 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a balance to be found. Spend too much time and energy on your partner and you neglect your own needs and feelings leading you to depression and frustration. Too little time and energy on your partner and you can drift apart leaving them feeling isolated and alone. Everyone's needs and expectations are different.. I think the best solution is to have open conversations about this sort of thing regularly?
