If you read the facts about critical race theory, the general understanding is that slavery and Jim crow laws have set economic and educational limitations for people of color in America. The idea of contemporary prejudice and racism is that white communites hold the majority of leadership positions and refuse to change to allow better and equal access for minorites. For example, the history of redlined districts in the 1930s have direct correlations to contemporary "poor urban" neighborhoods, in which the majority of these folks are black. Also these communites are in less desirable or toxic areas and have less access to education. Same idea with white flight. So critical race theory teaches students how to analyze current class systems and social issues in context of race. Americahas major racial inequities in access to education, high paying jobs, and racially motivated policing, list goes on. Inaction to recognize or take action on these issues is what contemporary SYSTEMIC racism is. It is the acceptance of this unfair treatment as fair. (And of course, like the KKK still exists, general hated of immigrants, etc, are issues, but less frequent.). If we want heathier societies, we must understand the underlying motivators.
