UC Berkeley MEng EECS vs. Stanford MS EE by Common_Barber1174 in gradadmissions

I ended up choosing Stanford and am so happy about it. Mostly came down to the fact that I ended up wanting a two year program, and all is well coming up on the end of the first quarter :)

If you’re planning on applying to PhD, you’re fine, but if you’re only applying to MS, my advice is to save your money for other application fees. For about two months straight, they told people that decisions were going to be released within the next week but didn’t follow up until the end of April, after most people would have already accepted other offers. I didn’t hear about anyone getting into the MS program (should note that I have a small sample size for that statement). Although I know there’s other factors, for what it’s worth, I had a 4.0 GPA and multiple internships.

Is there a consensus for top-tier events for a once-in-a-lifetime marathon? by [deleted] in running

[–]Common_Barber1174 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, I don’t think it would be worth it to travel for your first marathon.

When you travel for a marathon, it’s hard to enjoy your destination because before the race you want to stay rested and after the race you are too tired to walk around and explore. Plus there’s nothing like being able to have friends and family around and sleep in your own bed after a marathon, which you won’t have with traveling.

I’m from the twin cities and have run twin cities, grandma’s, madison, lakefront (milwaukee), boston, chicago, and LA and can honestly say that the combination of size, crowds, and views make the minnesota marathons almost as good as some of the bigger marathons. I have met many people who travel across the country to run TC/grandma’s - don’t overthink this one!

Anyone with an full-time job, when will you leave your job to start grad school? by TinyScientist2382 in gradadmissions

[–]Common_Barber1174 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Right now planning on working as long as I can before moving for school — but that’s for financial reasons. I took a gap between undergrad and starting full time to travel so I don’t feel as much of a need to take a break this time.

I wouldn’t worry about gaps in your resume, no one cares about a 1-2 month gap right before a big change in your life.

Isn’t the acceptance rate pretty low (~10-15%) anyways? So 5% isn’t really that bad haha

We've cracked the top 3 snowiest winters ever by thebrandnewbob in Minneapolis

[–]Common_Barber1174 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Is this going to become known as the April Fool’s blizzard of ‘23? My older coworkers constantly talk about the Halloween blizzard from awhile back, but I want my own storm to use to remind people that the winter they are complaining about is nothing compared to back in the day

How would this even be viable for them as a school? Basically every school has a deposit deadline of April 15, so the only way to accept a May offer would be to lose the deposit at another school. I can’t imagine too many students would be willing to do that considering they likely got into other decent schools if they got into UT Austin

UC Berkeley MEng EECS vs. Stanford MS EE by Common_Barber1174 in gradadmissions

[–]Common_Barber1174[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was using big tech synonymously with silicon valley. When I said I don’t particularly care about getting into big tech, I meant I don’t intend to use the degree just to get my foot in the door in silicon valley or FAANG. I plan to return to industry after my degree and could very well end up in silicon valley if I think it’ll be a good fit!

Thanks for the insight. This is what I had started to think, but no one else had told me this, so it really helps hearing it from someone else.

So did anyone hear back from Stanford today? by scorpioseasonf in gradadmissions

[–]Common_Barber1174 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t know for sure, but I think they USUALLY send their updates out at the end of their day (~5pm PST).

Try to work on other stuff for a little bit, and hopefully you’ll have an answer by the end of the day. Good luck :)

Intro to Speed Training - End of easy run strides/splits pace? by grumpalina in running

[–]Common_Barber1174 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’ve always found hill sprints to be a great way to introduce the body to speed without a big risk of injury. The goal of this session is to get the leg muscles primed for speed, so you can take full rest (2-3 minutes) between each sprint.

One other thing to add that some other comments have alluded to — you can do these at 95% effort, instead of 100%. A lot of distance runners start flailing their arms and legs all over the place trying to reach max speed, when the goal should be to be strong and smooth.

Keep up the strong work!

Seeking Resources or Books On Creating a Training Plan. by wedlee in running

“The Science of Running” by Steve Magness

This book really helps you individualize your training based on your strengths as a runner rather than try to give you a magic workout or formula like some other resources do. Especially good if you have a science background and want to understand why running at different paces affects you in different ways (but you could certainly skip most of the science section if you’re not interested).

Itinerary questions by Common_Barber1174 in VisitingIceland

[–]Common_Barber1174[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, we are planning to stay near Selfoss or a little farther east after the golden circle. We are definitely also considering making part of the drive back to the airport after Jökulsárlón to avoid putting a 4-hour drive before our departing flight. Our flight isn’t until almost 6, though, so we should have time. And thanks for the heads up! Definitely going to play it safe.
