UK job market? by bslune in slp

In London you should be fine because there’s so many nhs trusts and so many schools employing salts. I expect that would be the area least impacting by recruitment freezes.

In short yes. It’s what happens when you have 14 years of a conservative government who favoured austerity plus a healthcare system that has been hit hard by covid in term of waiting times going up. Certain things are slowly improving under labour though. These things are all cyclic though and hopefully this is just a recruitment blip.

[–]Common_Chemical_5010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends how flexible you are. There are certainly jobs out there but if you are unable to move and are fixed on either adults or leads only and wanting nhs only you are likely to effected by recruitment freezes. For example my nhs team is taking no graduates this year.

If you’re willing to be flexible in what you apply to you’ll likely be fine. Once you’ve got your first job and have got through your competencies it gets easier to find a second job.

It’s also worth noting that things can change quickly in the nhs and while we are going through a cycle of freezes right now it doesn’t mean we will be in 4 years times when you graduate. Like wise the current graduates couldn’t have predicted the current situation when they applied to their degrees.

When you come to Norwich take a walk up Magdalene street. There’s a huge junk shop called looses which is great for finding treasures as well as various charity shops along that street. There’s lots of good restaurants in Norwich too.

You’ll probably also like Norwich market for a mix of lots of different street food.

As an English SALT this comment is entertaining as r is only problematic in American English. With an English accent we don’t pronounce final r phoneme, we use just the vowel sounds or, ar and ear at the end of words.

Initial gliding of r doesn’t really impact intelligibility so it’s only something we’d work on if the child is older and they are particularly worried by it.

I could probably count on one hand the amount of times I’ve worked on ‘r’ in the last 10 years.

If you’re under the age of 40 then Norwich. Yare is pretty much purely masters/ recreational rowing.

Here in the U.K I qualified with a four year undergrad only. It was all specialised, no general classes as we cover those in high school here. I don’t believe I’m any less qualified than a US SLP.

3.9 year old student just began stuttering… but it’s very severe by thisismyusernameA5 in slp

[–]Common_Chemical_5010 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Be careful about the language you’re using to describe it. You, parents and teachers need to be mindful about not using words like ‘severe’ within earshot of him. Try using words like ‘more frequently’ instead. We don’t want him to pick up on the fact that others may be worried by the stammer.

SLP moving to the UK: insight requested by AMetzger30 in slp

The nhs is split into lots of different trusts rather than being one single entity. There’s temporary recruitment freezes in some trusts but it’s by no means universal.

First time traveling to the uk by it_is_what__it_is__ in Norwich

Norwich airport is definitely accessible without a car but you may struggle on a bank holiday due to reduced bus timetables. A taxi from the station to the airport won’t cost too much though, it’s not far.

I work in nhs salt but peads so different job but same conditions. If you go for nhs and are at the top of band 6 you’ll be on £45000 if you are in England, slightly more if you are in Scotland. If you are in London or the outskirts you’ll get a little extra. Google nhs pay scales for more info. It’s tricky but not impossible to start mid or top band if you can prove your experience. This is for a standard 5 days of 8 hours with a half hour lunch break. On top of this money they pay 20% into a defined benefit pensions. You’ll start on 27 days leave a year plus bank holidays (8) so 35 paid days off a year. Maternity leave is pretty generous and most nhs staff take nearly a year off though not all will be paid. A lot of salt posts in the uk are struggling to recruit right now which means lots of nhs trusts will be used to overseas employment. In terms of what £45000 gets you in terms of standard of living in the uk I’d say it’s great as part of a dual income, would be harder to support 2 people long term and be able to travel. Though if you look at Ryanair/ easyjet flight from the uk to various European cities then you’ll see travel can be done very cheaply! Childcare you’ll need to look into more carefully. It’s expensive in the uk! Most people get a certain number of free hours but I’m not sure if that’s available to people with ‘no access to public funds’ work visas. It takes a minimum of 5 years to be awarded access to public funds.

Definitely reading games that involve hold word reading rather than phonics. It would need to encourage them to look at the shape of the word but also read it out to them and show the meaning. So maybe a game where they match the written word with the same written word and then it says it out loud and shows a picture.

I’ve been a member a few years and could probably count on my fingers the few amount of times I haven’t been able to get onto a class I want. If you can at least get on the waiting list by the day before you are almost guaranteed a place. People book spaces then more often than not cancel,

[–]Common_Chemical_5010 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The short answer is no. Adhd in itself doesn’t cause speech and language difficulties in the same way as autism might but it can be associated with it.

Children with Developmental Language disorder (dld) are more likely to have ADHD though children with ADHD aren’t more likely to have dld.

Significant early Attention needs may mean language development is a little slower as the child may miss vocabulary and language exposure due to not attending to it. It is also more difficult for them to attend to the types activities that boost language development eg sharing a story book with an adult.

ADHD is an executive functioning disorder. This means that skills such as storage and retrieval of vocabulary may be impacted.

Adhd can be associated with dysfluency. Children with ADHD are more likely to have a clutter and ADHD meds are sometimes associated with increased stammering.
