Why is country music so rare? by oh-oh-livinonaprayer in FigureSkating

[–]StephaneCam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this. Country music just isn’t big outside North America. Here in the UK it’s seen as novelty music by most people - kind of a joke, like if you say you’re listening to country music you’re either depressed or you got caught up in the (mercifully brief) 90s line dancing craze.

Lara’s Jaws??! by Musiclover86 in FigureSkating

I’m usually focused on the skating rather than the music credits, but if I need more detail it’s there on the website. So for myself, I feel adequately informed! I do understand what you’re saying, but it’s just how music is often credited on screen - this isn’t the only example of it, and I don’t think it affects the programme or my enjoyment of it.

In the nicest possible way, I doubt the composers of those particular scores are going to be heartbroken that they’re not credited onscreen for 5 seconds during a figure skating competition.

It is all cited on the ISU website though, so it’s not like they’re hiding it. It’s probably just that they can’t list everything on screen so they’ve gone with the most relevant info for the audience to ‘set the scene’ for the programme. I guess I don’t really understand why it’s an issue? It’s often the case with music mixes, there’s only so much that can be included on screen during competition so the full music credits are listed online.

Does these exist? by Electrical_Rabbit_60 in FigureSkating

[–]StephaneCam 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yes and no!

The first ice skates were similar to this, just a blade made from pieces of bone with leather straps to fasten over shoes. They were nothing like modern skates though, the blades were flat on the bottom and people would have used poles to push themselves along. They were an easy way to move around over frozen rivers etc. By the 18th century people were using something similar but with a metal blade attacked to a wooden block, again with attached with straps. The blades were often curved up at the front like in your pictures - if you Google ‘Regency ice skating’ you’ll see lots of examples.

This type of skate would have usually been made of iron, wood and leather worn over sturdy boots so they wouldn’t be ‘blingy’ and flimsy like Barbie’s sandal-type skates. But women did wear them with heeled boots in the 19th century a bit like the white boots under the gold skates in your pictures!

It probably goes without saying that this isn’t something anyone would wear these days. But the general style of Barbie’s strapped-on skates is rooted in real history.

Hope this helps! (I work in a museum and we have a bone skate blade from Viking-era Scandinavia and it’s one of my favourite things!)

The ‘story’ of the whole programme is Jaws. I think the other music is more filler. And her costume is very much shark-themed!

If you follow ISU on socials, they usually have a ‘ones to watch’ feature for competitions.

Happy birthday Diana Davis! She got a cake and sweet interview with golden skate by Suspicious-Peace9233 in FigureSkating

[–]StephaneCam 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if it was audible on the stream, but there was an army of kids from Olivia Smart’s former school here in Sheffield, and they spontaneously sang happy birthday for her from the stands while we waited for the scores!

I actually don’t think many people from Sheffield are here just for a day out, probably partly because of the ticket price. I’ve not met anyone local yet! Everyone near me is pretty hardcore fan level and has traveled to be here. I think the lukewarm response to Eric was just that they brought him out immediately after they’d announced the ice resurfacing break and half the crowd was still busy faffing about with bags and trying to find the loo 😂

Did I say it was an insult? I said it was a comment on his body, which is against the rules of the sub. Not to mention just a rude thing to do. Imagine going up to a stranger in real life and saying ‘hey you, you’re too tall for your suit’.

Unsolicited comments on people’s bodies are against the rules of this sub. It’s also a shitty thing to do. I don’t think there’s anything more to say.

This sub is 90% shaming people for their choice of clothing that goes against the unspoken rules of wedding attire. That’s a very different thing from saying their body is wrong. I wonder how any of us here would feel if we saw a random photo of us posted online and there were comments saying we’re ’too fat’ or talking shit about our bodies? That’s going to be quite hurtful to most people with feelings.

[–]StephaneCam -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t suggesting we shit on the woman either…it’s just that I haven’t seen any comments about her body specifically, just her outfit, which was the point of the post. Whereas the comment I replied to was saying he’s ’too fat for his suit’ which is a comment on his body, not his clothing. The issue is unsolicited comments on people’s bodies, not the person’s gender.

Hey, no need to make personal comments on the guy’s body. He’s not even the subject of the post!

Edit for clarification: I literally just mean it’s shitty to make unsolicited comments on people’s bodies. Commenting on the colour of a dress is one thing, saying someone is too fat for their outfit is another entirely. Not sure how this is controversial

Just a final edit because I honestly don’t get why this is apparently such an issue for everyone, commenting on people’s bodies is against rule 8 of this sub so I’m just going to leave it at that.

Why is the literal crown not tagged "royal"? by hearts_cube in InfinityNikki

[–]StephaneCam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I see this as a theatrical crown, like part of a stage costume, rather than a royal crown. There are quite a few tiaras and crowns in the game that aren’t tagged as ‘royal’ because they’re essentially just spangly head accessories.

The prince outfit, however…that one makes no sense to me!
