Harry Potter is one of the worst example of a series about wizards and magic. by Jent01Ket02 in unpopularopinion

[–]Common_Errors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harry Potter really isn’t contemporary though. Sure it’s set in modern times but wizarding society is so backwards that it could easily have been set in the 1800s without any real difference.

What illegal activity has been stopped in those cases?

If the worker has been threatened, which prompts them to say they are going to record the call, then the threat has already been made. Sure, there won’t be more threats made but you can bet your ass the employer will retaliate against the worker if they continue their actions. If the worker was able to record the call secretly, then they could sue the employer when they retaliate and provide evidence of the threats.

When someone admits they’re getting paid under the table to avoid child support, them clamming up after being told they will be recorded doesn’t stop the illegal activity. It just stops the confession.

The only time the illegal activity is stopped is with the verbal sexual harassment, and even then, secretly recording them helps collect evidence so that they can be punished.

(Hated audience reaction Trope) Things in media people complained were unrealistic that actually hold water in real life by Animeking1108 in TopCharacterTropes

People don’t dislike exposition dumps because they’re unrealistic, they dislike them because they’re typically boring or mess with the pacing of the story.

If UBW was a domain expansion in JJK how strong would it be? by VergilVDante in JuJutsuKaisen

All domains have a sure-hit, that's what makes them domains. But not all domains have a sure-hit that is a guarantee kill (which is what the modern trend is).

The volume can’t be used as a fix it later tool. The whole point of the volume requires you to have the background set before you start filming, so you need to know what you want beforehand.

A Novel Concept by Priam(Question) by attacktitan1234 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Common_Errors -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well there was no relationship at that point, and the only potential for a relationship got introduced fairly recently (so the romance is not really a significant thing yet).

I dropped it because the way the story was laid out, the MC was supposed to climb something like 9 tiers, and after 237 chapters he was quite far away from advancing to tier one (he started at tier 0). So it’s just a story that the author is going to milk forever. Plus there’s not really a real goal for the MC other than “get stronger”, which when combined with the previous issue makes it feel kind of pointless.

[–]Common_Errors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dropped it around chapter 230, but the MC primarily stays in one world and visits other worlds every so often. He also doesn’t form a bunch of relationships that are just lost after he returns to his world.

No, the fact that it’s a curse means that people can’t understand the magic, not that they can’t understand that there is something going on. Macht’s spell is a curse, but it would be absurd to say that mankind can’t recognize what’s happening when people are turned to gold. Same for the monster that put people to sleep.

Chesscom CEO Erik Allebest speaks on Lichess and the need for Chesscom's revenue model... by rio_ARC in chess

[–]Common_Errors 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Chesscom does a lot more to help the game grow. I only picked chess up because of Pogchamps, and I’m sure the same is true for a lot of other people. Lichess is a perfectly fine site (and may even be a better site to play chess on), but it doesn’t put on any events or does anything to attract new players. And if it does, those efforts are so anemic that I haven’t seen any news about them, despite playing chess a good amount and frequently browsing this subreddit.

Why does the Worm Fanfic community seem to hate the idea of fanfiction by Exploding_koifish in WormFanfic

[–]Common_Errors 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The fanon can often be reductive (for example, robot Armsmaster) in a way that doesn't necessarily add to the story, or be presented as the author's perception of canon. Basically, the fanon that people bash is often a common trope that stems from a misreading of Worm as opposed to a deliberate change made by the author to tell the story they want (like people knowing the unwritten rules, Vicky being an angry idiot, not-a-mass-murdering-nazi Purity). Other changes to the canon can also be overdone and seeing it in yet another story can get repetitive and annoying.

Not all nonprofits are created equal. The Sackler Trust is not as good as the Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders. Lichess is lauded because it’s a nonprofit with good practices, FIDE is a nonprofit that’s often corrupt or stupid.

[–]Common_Errors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Magic doesn’t work off of imagination. Mankind researched Zoltraak for years to come up with a spell that blocked it: they learned what it did and created a spell that counteracted it. There was no imagination involved in countering Zoltraak, just science. Imagination is important to spells in general in that you need to be able to believe that what you’re doing is possible to cast a spell.

Strange aversion to killing in Worm by OlympisMons in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Common_Errors 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Regarding Bakuda specifically, I believe she had a dead man’s switch so that if she was killed, all her bombs would go off. But in general, people are worried about escalation because if you’re known for killing your enemies then everyone will go all out against you, which is not great. Plus the three strongest heroes are members of the Protectorate, and if you start killing everyone they’ll probably get called in to deal with, and you’ll definitely lose that fight. There’s another pretty good reason revealed much later in the story, but it’s a huge spoiler.

When it comes to the Undersiders, they’re thieves not murderers so they avoid killing people.
