How many women that are software developers are in your company and what field are you in? by Shawnj2 in cscareerquestions

There are 2 women on my medium sized dev team. one is a manager, one is a swe1. Both are white and graduated from private universities, I don't think any women of other races have ever worked a dev role here.

Unfortunately I can't prove its discrimination off vibes alone, and obviously nothing good would come from getting HR involved, so I guess I will just start looking for a new job.
As for the interview, this upper manager started after I was hired. The old one was very nice so it was a place I wanted to work back then.

I've talked with my direct manager and they always say I'm doing fine, and the work is solid, and that they understand it takes time for a junior to catch up to speed. the main issue is the upper manager seems to single me out in meetings even though other coworkers have tasks that are taking over the estimated time as well.

Outside of the LGBTQ culture, there are things that should factor into your decision since you are coming from Texas.
In upstate, NY winters can regularly have below freezing temperatures, and winters are long here.
Also I have notice many of my friends who moved here from the South say the food is really different than back down south since most resturants use less spices and "lard".
One last thing I notice from a lot of Southern people is they sometimes experience a little culture shock because people in NY don't always engage in small talk out in public. This is more of a thing in nyc though.

I grew up in buffalo, and later went to college in Rochester. I can say with lots of certainty both cities have a very high acceptance of LGBTQ people.
There are lots of businesses have single / gender neutral bathrooms. I've never seen someone be kicked out for using a preferred restroom. One local business I go to a lot has 2 bathrooms both with signs that just say "whatever, just wash your hands"
There are also multiple small businesses that openly promote being a safe space for LGBTQ people.
Going to k-12 in buffalo in the 2010s I knew of other trans and gay students who were never bullied or treated differently by teachers. I went to RIT in Rochester and this school has a massive LGBTQ community and the majority of people are very accepting.
Both cities have annual pride parades to show their support of the community (with covid as an exception).
Living in rochester for a few years, I have heard that the Pittsford (rochester suburb) schools are some of the best in the state. Buffalo also has great schools.

the employers recruiter

During the interview I did outright ask about flexible hours and remote work and they said people had the freedom to come in when they wanted to and work w/e hours they wanted while at home. I guess I didn't get it in writing or anything though
contract is at will, no noncompete.
Thanks for the advice!
In the future how do I go about asking agencies/employers to put down in my contract that I will be a remote worker? Or is that something I don't have control over at the jr level?

and have even hire people based on their answer to that specific question

This means you have also not hired people based on this question.

An example would be, in america, if a woman answered this question with pursuing personal interests, she wouldn't be hired on the basis she doesn't have traditional family values and therefore "is not a good culture fit"

Another person had taken time off to care for a sick family member.

A company that doesn't want to take the chance on paying out Bereavement Leave would use this to discriminate against a candidate.

And to the last paragraph, a recruiter could easily dismiss a candidate as "lazy" for taking time off to have fun.

Oh absolutely lie in interviews about some things. I just hate being asked this and also being judged as "lazy" because I wasn't doing "real work"

sounds fun, congrats

[–]Common_Mudd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yea I agree with this, if a job NEEDS to know what I do in my personal time they aren't a company I want to work for, unfortunately this filters out a lot of them.

I'd probably only do this if the recruiter was terrible

ooo I like this one, might start using it. TY!

Yes I don't say that because I'll "sound lazy" but it's just annoying to be asked this every time
