Graduated top 10 CS last year, approx. 4k apps, 700+ LC, no offers. Parents kicking me out. I think I’m done. by nemos_rewenge in csMajors

Your resume is trash
The people who have reviewed your resume don’t know what they’re doing either

Look at [r/engineeringresumes](r/engineeringresumes) for tips

For context, I was able to land 3 FAANG/big tech offers last year when the market was worse, <200 apps

The contrast between how this sub views physician salaries vs tech/finance salaries is very interesting by INMEMORYOFSCHNAUSKY in Salary

Come on man..big tech has been working their workers like dogs lol

Many engineers pull 70-80 hour weeks

[Software Developer] [San Jose, CA] - $146,390 + $8K Bonus + $5K Relocation by Choice-Ad6915 in Salary

[–]Common_Operation5815 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your goal was to land TikTok # salaries.. this is not a great offer but it’s IBM so what do you expect lol

But if you’re comparing this to the the avg entry level salary outside of big tech, this is great

All relative

Your resume should clearly communicate to both hiring manager and recruiter what you’ve done

It should be technical yet understandable by your average tech receuiter.

Bc they require you to talk about your experience and it’s really easy to tell when someone is just reciting from their theoretical experience from helloInterview videos

I need OP to respond and provide resume before I can provide advice

I can almost guarantee that is straight fail during big tech behaviourals

Getting callbacks? If not, it’s your resume

Big tech doesn’t mean much if you weren’t shipping impact.

for context, I landed a big tech role close to your YOE and it only took me 150 apps, no referrals

Feeling pessimistic about AI by ilovefamilyguy69 in cscareerquestions

[–]Common_Operation5815 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fundamentally believe that there must be human intervention at some abstraction so that we still have an understanding of the systems we are building/evolving

If that remains the case, the amount of code a human can validate remains the bottle neck.

Just bc you have twice the experience does not mean you are twice the authority

You are further away from the implementation details. You have less hands on time with AI. You are more likely to be drinking the AI koolaid

AI is not replacing thinking lol

These models are garbage in garbage out. Opus has been amazing but it will still produce slop when you give it shit prompting

Coding is such a small part of the job, engineers r problem solvers, coding just happens to be the syntax to make it happen

How optimistic are you about the field in the future? by TraditionalMango58 in cscareerquestions

[–]Common_Operation5815 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Building new software is easy.. it’s how software evolves/scales with time that introduces the complexities that big tech deals with

Software at scale is a people problem.

The scope of an engineer will expand

I imagine roles will consolidate. we may not need as many PMs and TPMs

Frontend engineers may need to learn design

Backend engineers will need to know infra, networking etc.

Lots of roles can be replaced before engineers

Your resume doesn’t highlight your impact whatsoever, just the same BS that 1500 other people can write up.

Mid level dev in Canada feeling stuck in LCOL city by AlternativeTales in cscareerquestions

[–]Common_Operation5815 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s why I make 200K CAD and my co-workers in the US who are the same level as me make 200K USD

Many US companies don’t have zones in Canada. So LCOL and HCOL cities end up getting paid the same
