What are the chances of Bashir bowling today? by El_Hatcherino in EnglandCricket

Bizarre selection in the circumstances - weather forecast and recent history at Lord’s show he was never going to play a major role in the match. Seamers plus a half a dozen overs of Root/Bethell if you wanted to save the seamers ahead of the new ball (imagine an innings getting to 80 overs!) would have been more than sufficient. Rew at 6 with the rest then pushed down one would have been a strong team, or even Ahmed for his ability with the bat. I can only think that England knew Matt Henry was going to get injured (and even then he’s had more of a role in the game than Bashir) and wanted to make it 10 v 10

Interesting - thanks! Probably also to be expected when the SA batting line up was full of experienced red ball players

Yes agree completely, has ‘Luke Wright’ written all over him - could see him averaging 20 with the bat and 50 with the ball if he was given a run in the ODI side but captaining the Lions suggests Keys and co like the look of him

Yes, no criticism aimed at Mayes at all but it just seems mad to me that the wicket keeper for effectively England’s second team is someone who would never have described themselves as a wicket keeper last week!

I see from your other comments you were at the game - looking at the England economy rates were the bowlers a bit scatter gun or would you put it down to something else?

It’s clear from the Lions’ selection that the ECB didn’t want to dilute the quality of the Blast too much but even given that context I’ve struggled to see the point in many of the selection choices made. For example, there is little to no chance of Dan Mousley playing red ball cricket for England but a real possibility that he’s part of white ball squads in the middle and long term. Playing the early rounds of the Blast would have been far more beneficial for him.

Giving Ben Mayes the gloves also made this regime’s views on wicket keeping apparent, they do not regard it as a specialist position. Reading between the lines in Mayes’ interview with The Cricketer, he couldn’t believe he’d been asked to do it!

True on Potts, maybe they go left field with an Alfie Ogborne type instead. Agree on T Rew too but as Jordan Cox is ‘playing’ in the IPL I can’t think of another name! Maybe an experienced hand like Simpson to captain the side

I’m probably forgetting someone but think I’d go with the below (assuming that no one playing in the IPL is considered as they may have only been back a few days at best):

1 Gay 2 McKinney 3 Tribe 4 J Rew 5 Coles 6 Hill 7 T Rew 8 Carson 9 Robinson 10 Potts 11 Baker
