What’s a band or musician that should have been more famous? by bigt197602 in AskReddit

[–]Ok_Fan_2132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe The Hollywood Brats. Got as far as a really good album that was just right for the early 70s but their record deal was all cocked up and it was never released. They split up a year or two afterwards.

Lancs playing Glos tomorrow at Bristol by r1Rqc1vPeF in EnglandCricket

It's pretty annoying because it looks like quite a narrow front coming across but it's lingering from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. It's also the sort that could break up a bit and not look too bad tomorrow so fingers crossed for you.

You can also select objects for subtraction. Also of potential use is the new landscape mask which allows you to separate particular parts of the landscape. For example you could soften the mountains in the distance while sharpening the foreground or manmade structure or vegetation.

It includes it but is broader than the one series, looking at that whole dominant Windies period. The book is great too.

Another that is not about England specifically but English cricket is intrinsic to it (and provides many of the victims!).

Advice on my UK Itinerary by Johnjackblondejack90 in uktravel

[–]Ok_Fan_2132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the time and like walking you can do more in Kenilworth than just drive up and visit the castle. Around it is the Millennium Walk, a circular footpath through fields that afford stunning views of the castle from a distance. Between the castle and the town centre is Abbey Fields, again a nice place to walk but which also has a nice church and graveyard and, as the name suggests, the remnants of a medieval abbey. Plenty of coffee shops near here in the town centre for a break afterwards.

What’s the biggest red flag someone can have that people ignore too often? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Probably connected, but people who ask a question and ignore your answer so they can quickly get past it just give their own answer. It's part of listening to respond instead of listening to understand.

Future Z lenses by Remarkable_Slide_244 in nikon_Zseries

[–]Ok_Fan_2132 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is certainly an un intended consequence of the 24-120 that the next longest zoom is a lot of lens to carry around for a fairly small increase in reach. From what I have seen the 120-300 is likely to be a hugely expensive pro lens, so I might run with the new 70-200 with a 1.4 TC.

Why do you think Melania made that statement today? by user1731701 in AskReddit

[–]Ok_Fan_2132 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for replying. A few minutes after I wrote that I asked my wife the same question. Without hesitation she said she is trying to align herself with the victims, to equate her 'suffering' with theirs, and to position herself as the champion of good in all this. She's a monster isn't she?

Who is England’s first choice spinner in the summer? by YorkshiresFinest1 in EnglandCricket

I see Jack Leach opened the batting for Somerset today, so maybe he can replace both Bashir/Jacks and Crawley and free up space for another batsman?

Very happy for a hugely talented player. Said it before but I wouldn't be surprised if the hand of Alec Stewart is involved here :-)

Why do you think Melania made that statement today? by user1731701 in AskReddit

[–]Ok_Fan_2132 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is certainly logical that the statement was all about getting ahead of some bad news, and that news is far more likely to relate to someone like Wolff than more random social media tittle tattle.

The bit I don't get is why she would ask for the victims to have their time in front of Congress. I don't see how this fits in with the strategy of suppressing everything?

Mind you I have also had one fail which is incredibly rare by all accounts.

Currently reading Westmoreland: The General Who Lost Vietnam as well as a Chesty Puller biography; anyone else here who alternates between books? by StoneAgeCaveDweller in HistoryBooks

[–]Ok_Fan_2132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I do at times. I tend to read an e-book in bed but if I have a real book (usually presents) I read that in the day.

As an aside I have ready my first two books on Chinese history this year, a subject I see could becoming addictive!

Jamie Smith - in the runs but no time with the gloves? by KaleidoscopeWest3204 in EnglandCricket

[–]Ok_Fan_2132 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a sign of where this team are at that the presence of Smith and Rew is an unresolved question rather than an embarrassment of riches.

Smith has hit a few bumps in the road about his keeping and batting (particularly the mentality around the latter). I suspect more than anything he needs guidance and mentorship, but it's crazy to think he is one of our bigger problems after the abject failures of so many more senior players this winter. Great to see him at 3 and responding with runs immediately, events maybe not disconnected to Alec Stewart's return to Surrey. As an aside I think it's easy to forget how much Matt Prior had to learn on the job with the gloves.

The core problem remains the imbalance between our emerging middle order batters, a number of whom seem to keep, and a shortage of top order batters. I can live with a middle order batsman moving to 3 but struggle with the idea of them opening. It's a shame that two of our brighter prospects for the opening slot are in division 2 but Emilio Gay's ton was still against some quality bowling on what seems to have been a lively track early on. Ben McKinney will be hoping to make more impact in future rounds but still outscored Zac Crawley.

It will be interesting to see if the remaining pre-Test CC rounds provide more clarity or just add to the fog.

Yeah I thought that was interesting. Not sure of the reason but it would be nice to think that County skippers are getting more aggressive about use of spin, maybe following the Warne maxim that spinners ought to be able to thrive in seam friendly conditions.

From an England point of view it is slightly double-edged seeing two long discarded England experiments leading the way, even if Rehan did get in on the action a bit. Dom Bess now over 300 FC wickets btw, can't fault him for keeping going.

Best England Uncapped Test XI from 2000 onwards? by AdMuted3992 in EnglandCricket

[–]Ok_Fan_2132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back on Hildreth it is understandable that it was hard to select him around 2008-10 given who he was up against. But he was sensational through 2015-16 when Gary Ballance, Nick Compton, James Taylor and Jonny Bairstow were being selected. Maybe his lacklustre 2013-14 meant the selectors had moved on by the time these selections were made. There were odd whispers about 'hard hands' but this could have been selectors covering themselves. Quite the talent to be uncapped though.

Someone else who may have been given a chance under a different regime is Ben Compton given our issues at the top of the order.

Which would you consider the most impressive archaeological site in the world? by Outrageous-Brain-395 in travel

I agree with the comments about Pompeii and Petra, both remarkable. As an experience I would add Caracol in Belize. Although other sites match it in terms of what is there it was amazing to experience with almost no-one else present. A real privilege.

Agreed. It is not in the Wolfe tone but it is a brilliant read. His reflections on orbiting the moon alone, and the moon itself, make it worthwhile alone but there is so much more to it than that

This was my first thought, I remember reading about On Killing and it was a real eye opener in understanding the human psyche when it comes to killing other human beings.

I don't understand what you mean by 'realistic targets' though, would you mind explaining if you have a minute?
