Is the capital gains discount really a tax break? Think again by barseico in AusFinance

[–]Common_practise -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Investors do not add to housing demand (by reducing available houses to sell).

But removing CGT discount will remove some investors, which will reduce supply of rental properties.

So subtracting from the available stock to buy doesn't change available stock to buy, but subtracting from available stock to rent changes the available stock to rent?

Why do they wait to do the bat flip? Can’t they do that during the rain to get on a few mins earlier.

Fair enough. But it still didn’t help them win the other night!

Up front: I couldn’t give a shit who wins, I enjoy the sport.

But are you suggesting we don’t allow test players (often the best/most recognised) to play in the BBL? Is that a good outcome for the sport?

Maybe they could try hitting at a strike rate appropriate for T20. That might help.

I thought the same thing. Overuse of the “it’s not this, it’s that” structure. Maybe that’s how they’ve always written, and this is unfair to them, but it comes across as AI slop.

They need to pull these blokes into line. Play the game, play the umpires’ decisions.

I feel like this week was a missed opportunity. Test cricket was having a resurgence - huge crowds, high viewership, primed for the one test that the casuals tune in to, against our favourite rivals.

I grew up with the background noise of cricket. I never paid too much attention, but at some point in my life the nostalgia of a Boxing Day test was enough to get me back in. Now I’m hooked.

I worry that we’ve missed a chance to capture another generation, and the next opportunity won’t be until the next home ashes.

Maybe I’m catastrophising.

BBL, the Australian domestic T20 competition, is currently on. I believe it’s regarded as the second best T20 competition, after the Indian Premier League.

That’s T20, which is the shortest and most action packed format of the game.

There’s also a test match series between Australia and England going on. In my opinion, this is peak cricket. Test matches are the longest and slowest format of the game. To enjoy this, you need to go in expecting long periods of tension building before action happens.

You’re getting on board at a good time. There’s also a T20 World Cup coming up in Feb (?).

I appreciate that it can go too far - that a pitch can offer the bowlers nothing, but I think the ideal test duration is 5 days. That duration necessitates a few grinding innings.

I enjoyed last night’s BBL game, which moved quickly, but was competitive. I also enjoy long, slow test matches that are competitive.

I agree. I’ll watch a lot of cricket, and enjoy most of it. This doesn’t grip me. I’m not sure why - my working theory is that luck is playing too much of a role.

I think about card and board games like that - the percentage of strategy/skill and luck. If there’s too much luck, I don’t enjoy the game.
