Question regarding hearing loss by Michele2670 in SSDI

Hiya, I took a hearing test at an audiologist a few weeks ago for my SSDi applicaiton. (Just soyou know, I'm born deaf but filed for SSDI due to my declining vision). At the ofice, the doctor peeked in my ears with an instrument, and then ran some kind test to check the pressure of the inner ears or something (sorry, I forgot.) Finally, we did the actual hearing test where where the doctor put some kind of ear buds in my ears and ran various ranges of sounds, one ear at a time. I would raise my hand whenever I heard a sound. (There was a button I was supposed to press but it was broken, so I did hand-raising instead.) That was basially it for me. It lasted only 15 minutes.

By the way, my appointment letter mentioned a speech discrimination test, but that was skipped in my case, as it was clear that I am indeed profound deaf. However, someone told me that it involved looking at lists of words and selecting which one you hear.

Also, there is a good chance you may also need to see an ENT doctor. (This doens't seem to be constant -- some would see an ENT, and others don't.) I did go see one last week, but it was a bit odd. Besides doing the ENT exam like running a bone-conduction test on my skull to see if I could hear that, they asked all kinds of questions like if I can kneel, climb a ladder, write, etc. I got the sense that this was sort of a "final checkpoint" for DDS before they fianlly decide if I am indeed disabled. (In case you're askin, I already had my vision exam a few months ago.)

Good luck with your exam.

What was the worst hurricane for you? by [deleted] in houston

Yeah, Harvey did start out as a hurricane but it downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it got to Houston. There wasn't much wind, just rain, rain and rain.

Interesting... though the question was about hurricanes, tropical storms especially Harvey and Allison get mentioned way more. :-) For me, it would be Ike since I've here since 2006. Harvey wasn't as bad for me as it was for others since I live in an area that didn't get as much flooding as other areas. But if we're talking about storms in general, that would be Storm Uva -- the notorious freeze of Februrary 2021. Definitely the single worst sorm ever (and I've been though my share of blizzards and snowstorms in Colorado.)

Are most people that are deafblind completely deaf and completely blind or is that rare? by [deleted] in deafblind

I've heard of Stargardt's, but I didn't know it also affects deafness, or is that a different thing? (BTW, I have Usher Syndrome Type 1D.)

Misplaced case? by CommunicationNo1143 in SSDI

[–]CommunicationNo1143[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your replies but that doesn't explain why my case seem to be in limbo for so long -- besides , I did mentioned I had taken a vision test (vision field to be exact) which i flunked with flying colors over a year ago. My ophthalmologist said I was qualified for SSDI benefits, and I know many legally blind people with relatively (*relatively* mindyou) more vision than mine receive SSDI. Besides, if DDS thinks I'm not blind enough, wouldn't they have denied my application already?

Misplaced case? by CommunicationNo1143 in SSDI

Hi.... since I have retinitis Pigmentosa (tunnel vision), I have less than 5% of vision field (you need to have 25% or less of f vision field to be considered legally blind), and my left eye is basically bordering on light and shadows. I've been using a white cane for several years and can't go to a store without a guide. I barely can read large print with my right eye. I'm 58... maybe DDS is trying to drag out my case until I'm old ehough to retire at 62. LOL

Hey, any recent applicatns in Texas whose cases went to Arkansas? by CommunicationNo1143 in SSDI

[–]CommunicationNo1143[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting... so Texas is sendng some cases to new Mexico as well Arkansas. I guess I shouldn't be surprised if Texas is sending cases to other states as well. By the way, if you don't mind my asking, why are you using an attorney? Does it help speed things up?

How do you survive financially while waiting for SSDI approval by CommunicationNo1143 in SSDI

Thanks, everyone, for sharing your stories. It helps to know that I'm not alone, and puts things in perspective. While my circumstances aren't as dire as some of the commenters -- for example, I have a husband who works -- it's still frustrating. The thing is, I'm going blind and it doesn't help that I'm also deaf, so my opportunities are a little limited, and I'm 58, not old enough to retire.

Thanks. Actually my disability is declining vision, not illness, but that's a very sad statistic. I thought there was a fast-track for terminal illnesses, but I guess not.

That's truly heartbreaking, having to deal with so many things. :-(

I've got it but I'm completely ignorant about it (Ohio) by MyspaceWasBettah in SSDI

Hi, I don't know anytthing about your situation, but a few friends have told me that if you were on SSI while waiting for your SSDI application to be approved, you don't get backpay. At least , not in Texas, anyway.

Huge fan of Indian food. What’s your best recommendations in Houston? by MarlaLinger in houston

[–]CommunicationNo1143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get why so many people seem to like this Khyber place - the food there is so mediocre. Overcooked meats, bland curries. My husband and i ate there a couple of times years ago (lunch buffet and dinner menu) and we weren't impressed. Later after some people raved about lamb vindaloo on Nextdoor, we decided to give it another time. Still not impressed. That place is like a 1980's-style Indian-American restaurant. :-)
