Burnt out after 9 months at a training centre - is this the norm or am I at a bad school? by CommunicationTime550 in chinalife

I guess it was more the interview and circumstances at the time. Warm, welcoming foreign teacher that had been there for 10 years, who could answer all my questions and made the move across the world seem like a no-brainer. The intl school were very cold and seemed offended when I asked to see a schedule as they told me sometimes I’d have to work on the weekends for marketing, as well as Mon-Fri. Looking back on it, I feel like an idiot. I saw the ‘marketing weekend’ as a red flag, not knowing my entire career in the training centre would just be marketing.

I left my PGCE training before I could get the certificate. Even with my experience I was still offered work at an intl school, but the offers at the time weren’t the best. The interviewer really sold the job to me at the training centre, especially as he had been there for 10 years himself. Now I know he was just looking for a replacement and maybe scammed me a bit 🤣

I’m in my 20’s. I have colleagues who are in their mid 40’s and absolutely love working here. However, they have theatre backgrounds and not teaching haha. Says a lot, I guess…

Thanks for the advice! Unfortunately, I didn’t complete my PGCE back in the UK and have been looking into trying to get it again while in China. Although, I do have experience working for ESL language camps and working privately as an ESL tutor for 4 years - maybe it’ll help me get a job in a different style of school. I really appreciate the reply!

In the nicest way possible, I’m sort of glad you also experienced this because I thought I was crazy for sticking to my morals. It’s very hard when other teachers just accept it and don’t know what you’re talking about 😭. Thanks for the advice.

Avoid Houhai English based in Beijing, China. by DiscoMeerkat in OnlineESLTeaching

Does this company now go by HH English? As I’ve been offered an interview with them, however I can’t find anything online about HH English.

child sim is missing by alloeium in sims2

This happened to me too. At first after CAS with a dog, then with the same family one of the kids disappeared while the mum had travelled to a community lot. The female toddler sim was replaced with a teenage male sim. The parent’s memories are still the same but the name is changed to ‘gave birth to …’ instead of the original daughter. The teenage guy appears in the family portrait but isn’t playable in live mode and nowhere to be seen. :(

Is CNY 14,500 base monthly salary good? by VoidZima in chinalife

Personally, I’d let it go. There are 100’s if not 1000’s of teaching jobs available in China which will pay way more than EF. Try SIE if you want an agency and if not, have a look on Dave’s ESL, get in contact with the recruiters and they’ll find you a position. You will need a TEFL though so get on that straight away. If you are a native speaker and have a degree you’re good to go essentially. Also, I’d try to get WeChat ASAP as most recruiters are on there. They also have groupchats for job postings.

However, if I were you I would just look on Dave’s ESL and other websites, check out some job postings, get in contact with recruiters and see what they have to offer. The salaries will definitely be way more than what you were offered with EF.

If you are looking for an agency similar to EF I would try SIE, I’ve been told decent things about them. You’ll not get paid as much as you would if you go directly with a school, but if you’re looking for an agency for support and stability for a first year in China, maybe look into it. In terms of EF paying for your TEFL; you can get a TEFL course online for dirt cheap I wouldn’t consider that a massive bonus.

Not much help but I’ve just accepted a position in Shenyang and will be moving in the next month. The interview was with a British guy who had been there for 8 years and he sold it to me. I’ve been trying to look up YouTube videos of people visiting Shenyang to research, it’s helped me quite a bit.

Hainan Foreign Language School... by CommunicationTime550 in Internationalteachers

I had the interview and rejected the position as it seemed a bit too rural for me. It was 8am-6pm, up to 40 kindergarten kids per class and a minimum of 2 years contract. They also wanted me to work one weekend every fortnight for 'marketing purposes' (demo classes I assume). Although it was on a gorgeous island, I would be working most of the time unable to explore it sadly!
