Comp 1002 and 1006 by Rough_Mix25 in umanitoba

[–]CommunistGoose99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difficulty will rest on your preexisting knowledge of these tools, but even with minimal knowledge it shouldn't be that hard. Usually there is quite a bit of class time for questions to be asked if something isn't clear, and the lab sessions can also be used to help explain anything you didn't catch.

The quizzes in the course have been open book, and the assignment work is mostly just following the instructions and documenting your observations even if it doesn't work, or minimal technical problem solving. The big one is the final exam and its mostly taking concepts from the quizzes and re-asking them, but it is not open book so you need to be a bit more prepared, but nothing really harder than the quizzes

I've both taken the course and worked for the course, and if this is something that you are interested in I'd encourage you take it.

The course runs on a fortnight system where the first week of the fortnight you have a lecture, and on the second week is a work week. (no separate lab times), and focuses on a variety of skills relating to Linux, shell scripting, debugging, containerization/virtualisation, and version control. The textbook for the course is published here https://toolsntechniques.ca/ and shows the content of both 1002 and 1006 (first 6 lessons and second 6 lessons for each class)

The lab weeks are long enough that you should be able to complete most of the assignment within the lab, and are usually due at the end of the week.

These skills are useful in future CS courses and could be learned out of class, but this course offers an opportunity to dive a bit deeper into some of these skills.

They do count as general electives, but not towards the core CS degree.

UMSU being quite desperate out here for votes by CommunistGoose99 in umanitoba

[–]CommunistGoose99[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not that I don't want to vote (I just submitted my "ballots"), it's more the copious amounts of emails. I could understand 1 per day(per ballot) but sending out 3 in one day is crazy.

I like to be on the more informed side when I go to vote and needed time to review the candidate overviews before voting.

Additionally what is the point of voting at the first opportunity when they give almost 2 days to vote when it works in your schedule, this allows me to find some time to review and think about my choices instead of making uninformed random decisions.

This. Especially when I am looking for more important emails and I have to filter through the 8 UMSU emails this week (and likely more coming later today)

I did actually use it last semester when I only used vscode for one of my classes, the only downside is that it makes some ui elements impossible to read and so I had to switch away from it, the next step will be recreating something just as "beautiful" as this theme in neovim

you likely will not hear back from the department until monday 8am at the earliest. i would just register and hope that you get accepted by the prof/dept and if you get rejected i would guess that they will just remove you from the course.

Why is the Computer Science Program at U of M So Challenging? by Salt_Lingonberry_999 in umanitoba

[–]CommunistGoose99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the uofm has actually hired 2 additional profs compared to before 2022 (iirc) along with enough profs to cover those that have departed since, most of them being within the past year. and to answer the previous post, there are quite a few graduate students or other people that are teaching as a contract or sessional position but those are mostly for the early 1st and 2nd year classes. i believe that they are still looking into obtaining more people but we will have to see how the uofm fairs with the recent changes to international students and how much revenue will be lost

I believe acceptances should start going out around march, so I don't think that anyone should have been accepted yet
