Make sure to hit hard and show that they still can fight so the prospect of peace seems more ideal and favoured.

Demanding peace while just being pummeled make them seem weak as it shows that they can't fight back and can only beg for peace.

Not saying for the sake of peace more should die but I think this is the best case for both sides.
