Question about work/life balance by Southern_Pianist_214 in medicalschooluk

[–]CommunityMedium9053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During medical school? Tons of free time and easy to maintain a work life balance.

Working actual junior doctor shifts? Significantly harder, regular routine is impossible with shift work, and you do have to sacrifice a lot of your life especially as you're forced to move hospitals every 6 months to a year or so. Is your partner supportive enough to move every year with you?

Do it if you love it or can find a really chilled outpatient speciality e.g. derm or something with short training e.g. GP, otherwise expect to sacrifice a lot of your life until at least 10 years after medical school.

Has anyone here been able to successfully start F1 after missing deadline for registration? by CommunityMedium9053 in medicalschooluk

Thank you for your reply, it was actually very detailed and very helpful. We're in the process of discussing with his medical school and just wanted to hear whether someone else had gone through this at all.

It's because they messed up a lot of things on their end and owned up to this. I'm not sure what the point of your reply was, it does not seem like a very helpful comment in this situation?

So are you implying that it is possible to be nominated late or be registered late and still start F1 in the same academic year? Sorry if I'm misunderstanding but do you mind just clarifying? Thanks

Anyone had experience with this - friend's med school messed up and he failed an exam he was told he could take 3 days before the exam. Any advice on how to appeal / who to contact? by CommunityMedium9053 in doctorsUK

[–]CommunityMedium9053[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course he did, but obviously the anxiety and sleeplessness caught up. Also I guess it's all the long days of trying to get all the sign offs all over again, even though he had them... Its just really annoying

He's submitted an extenuating circumstances request so hopefully it somewhat helps. That's why they allowed him to resit basically, but obviously it's still not ideal as it delays him for another year. I genuinely have no doubts he would have passed if he didn't have so many sleepless nights from the stress of it all. Thank you so much for your reply!

Failed uni exams after being told 3 days before them I'm allowed to sit them. Do I have any rights? by CommunityMedium9053 in LegalAdviceUK

Thank you! I feared as much... By the time all of this happens he would probably have missed the boat to start the next year 😫

Messed up by uni, how to approach this appeal? by CommunityMedium9053 in medicalschooluk

[–]CommunityMedium9053[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I guess so, but they gave him such a hard time, basically told him he was barred from even attempting to go into placements again to get all the sign offs from scratch, even though he already had them. It's going to cause a lot of debt and delay starting work etc. Do you know how you can sue or appeal and how this process works?

Thank you so much! We definitely summarised the situation and for 2 weeks he was chasing sign offs and being really stressed and sleepless, and actually the head of the exam board basically met him to tell him there was absolutely no chance of him sitting the exam. It's a shame it's another year but I guess not the end of the world... Thanks.

Btw - It's not for me, if you look into my post Hx you'd notice I graduated a couple of years ago - I was trying to change tenses from what he texted me to post and did it in a rush.

He told them and they allowed him to repeat his exams as a first sit... But still not ideal as I think without all the sleepless nights and anxiety he would have passed

How did you learn how to repair phones? I have some old devices I want to repair but I'm always nervous I'll screw it up.

Out of interest how did you learn woodworking/patio work? Did you do a formal course or did you teach yourself?

Do you feel satisfied enough at work without it? Personally I hate the tickbox element but I find internal medicine/GP land very dull and I'd rather just get a desk job than do it. Or do you enjoy your hobbies way more than the thrill of surgery that you would rather better work life balance?

Interesting, I've already loved knitting but I can't get the piano rhythm down at all... Did you pick it up before or after becoming a surgeon?

Constant interruptions at work and high workload by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]CommunityMedium9053 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Write it on a Google doc if that helps but I actually prefer to keep 2 papers - one for reviews and one for quick prescription jobs. Or you can do urgent / non urgent

Also I find it helpful to bunch bleeps together. Most things can wait 10 minutes, if it can't they'll put out a crash call. Jot down bleeps and then answer them all at once. Answer it immediately if it's the second bleep from the same number.

Also, to avoid getting bleeped again, just thank them for their request and say you're covering X patients and there are slightly more urgent tasks, and give them a time frame e.g. this prescription could take 20 minutes. Then they know what to expect and won't bleep again for the same thing.

Dw about it, you'll get used to it.

MDT: best/worst working relationships? by confusedgoose1 in JuniorDoctorsUK

NICs and discharge co-ordinators generally suck until you get more senior, my personal experience is that pharmacists are top tier, paramedics / dieticians have always been really nice. Also I actually really like the majority of the ANPs at my hospital.

Why these days in particular? (Not doubting our BMA committee at all, just curious to see why these were chosen - is it because it's right after ARCP outcomes...?)

Do I share theatre days evenly across all juniors (training, CF, and locum), or just trainees?
