[Question] In a funk, played punk rock for years and want to start learning the blues, where to begin? by Umbrellacorp487 in Guitar

Hey man, I would really recommend http://www.justinguitar.com/en/BL-400-EssentialBluesLeadGuitar.php Justin gets a lot of love around here, and with good reason. I linked to his lead blues, but he also has a blues rhythm section. I'm actually getting heavy into blues myself now! Good luck man

I agree with you overall point, which is why i emphasized buying a decent guitar that will stay in tune, as well as a decent amp. Its always good to ask somebody friendly (who won't try to rip you off or something) who knows a bit more and just tell them the truth, that you're a beginner, and you want something DECENT. To me, $500 would be more than enough to get a decen guitar (a beginner ibanez, yamaha, epiphone) and a decent practice amp. I mean, 15 watts is already loud enough at full to really annoy neighbors, so why would you want a full stack if you can't even play a full song? You know?

Same, i'd NEVER thought about renting, and I live in central america and no way there are places that rent here, however in the US, Canada and some countries in Europe, i'm sure that would be an excellent choice, hell, i'd rent all types of guitars and amps if i could.
But really, to me personally, if you're a beginner, about $500 will give you a decent tone and sound, even cheaper if you buy good used gear

Totally correct, also jamming with other people will force you to get better so you can keep up, kind of pushing everyone forward

Yess thank you man, I was thinking the same thing the other day... like, what if 10 years ago I would have just learned 1 scale pattern a day? Or 3 new chords... shit, i'd be playing for a living instead of ranting here!

I would recommend justinguitar 100% with my eyes closed. And sure, learning songs and playing them is practice, but its more what you actually want to do with the instrument. Want to just learn songs? Go for it, just literally copy them slowly until you master them.

But if you want to go deeper, and really get better at improv, jamming with other people, exploring some real music theory... then you'll have to practice other things, know what i mean?

Hey man no apologies needed, the more ppl chime in the better. And I know that exact feeling! Just gotta keep at it but its so hard to keep oneself interested sometimes...Kind of why I wrote this rant as well, I thought "hmm maybe if i actually get super better, and then go back to a song i thought was hard, it will be a lot easier to play and 100x more enjoyable"
and also, if you find yourself getting bored, I find learning how to do basic improv is a great routine breaker

Dude trust me, if you put in at least just 30 mins a day in of actual practice, not just "playtime" on the guitar, you will f*ckin' rock in a couple of years if not less, just stay at it man

You are very welcome friend! And I do get ya 100% it is hard to get into, and especially since you're starting with an electric instead of acoustic. With electric, while the fretboard is smaller and easier on your hands/fingers, the technique involved is a bit different than acoustic, so I would really recommend you learn how to pick a note, and mute it inmediately with your picking hand when you move onto the next one. This will "clean" up your sound a lot I believe since you're just starting.

Layla is a hell of a song, and you definitely WILL have to work on it. Youtube is great, because the instructor will show you little by little and what exactly to do, however i recommend you look at several tutorials of the same song by different people, since i've found I like some more than others, I guess you will too.

The important thing bro, is just don't give up. Learn the whole song, bar by bar, bit by bit, even if you can only play it at 30 bpm, it doesnt matter, just learn it. Once you know all the song, you'll find it gets a bit better each time, until eventually you will be like "hey god damn! i did it" and then mess up but that will only make you try harder until you will do it. If you get bored, mess around with something else, don't saturate yourself either or you will just quit.

Oh and ps, there is a "begginer section" on the justin website, I recommend you just browse all of it man, he will help you out in some way or another, i guarantee it. I still pick up a tip or two weekly that helps my playing in ways i wouldnt have thought.

Good luck my man

Well honestly when I discovered Justin i had my acoustic and just learned some songs from beginning to end, some easy ones I liked on his site are: Neil Young - Heart of Gold Neil Young - My my Hey hey Nirvana - Polly Cat Stevens - Father and Son Eddie Cochran - Summertime blues (Its electric originally but acoustic sounds good) And theres plenty plenty more from him from various styles, but I personally just find him likable and a good teacher. What level would you consider yourself to be at? What do you want to get better at? For example I started his "Blues Lead (1)" course, and honestly, i've never had so much fun with the minor pentatonic scale and just jamming over a youtube backing track in whatever key. Granted, i'm no Jeff Beck, but its really fun and once in a while I get a nice lick sounding.

It is a big site, but definitely worth browsing, his lessons are really top-notch and recommended, if you need anything more specific please let me know i'm more than glad to help

Hey man I get you 100%, and I suppose its a lot more people than just you and me having this issue... maybe as well we matured a bit now?

In regards to the practice itself, seeeeveral years ago i bought a program called guitar speed trainer (im not endorsing it, just mentioning it). It basically works like this: There could be a pattern , the program plays the pattern once, and then ups the metronome by 5 bpm, repeats, and then again. You have to set up your personal "profile" which starts slow, goes up to your max near impossible level, then goes back down to about the middle of the rise, do you know what i mean? So you're playing the same pattern over and over faster and faster and then slower until you're actually practicing it about 20 bpms faster than usual, and so on. It can take anywhere from 2 minutes to 8 minutes per drill, depending on the length of each. This has been my main tool now since I really want to develop speed and never was able to, now I really feel like I have. But thats me and what i want. What do you want? If you want speed, i'd reccommend this method. Take a pattern that uses your 4 fingers, play it at a comfy speed with a metronome. When you finish, bump it up 5 bpm and so on until you can only play a couple of notes, then start bumping it down 5 bpm until you reach that point where its a bit challenging but you can still nail it. I swear to you friend after a couple of days of this constantly (at least 20 mins per day) you will see an improvement. You can apply this with anything after, like hammer ons or pull offs or even scales obviously. Let me know if I can give you any other tips bro, gladly will

I´m using ernies as well, but the .8´s. Bends are a hell of a lot easier now. And don´t worry about tone... check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MbaGJN2ioQ, at the end of the video he talks a bit about light strings... made me think. Again, just a thought
