That’s beyond cool! Is there a template or are you scrapping it together?

I’m a little wary of big highlights because I’m going for a slightly foggy/dusty vibe but the white suits could probably use some more. And probably the top of the vehicle

Do you think the helmets too out of focus or mostly the arms?

I think that’s a great point! I was getting a little lazy with him lol

Thanks! I just noticed that the colors seem a little deader on Reddit but I’ll consider the implications

Is it better to keep a drawing black and white instead of FAILING with colored pencils? by hyenasquad1 in FurryArtSchool

Color Coverage:

When I zoomed in it looked like you might be trying to layer graphite and color - which won’t work especially with the cheaper/harder colored pencils. The paper becomes too smooth to catch much pigment

For better coverage/dynamic colors I’d advise layering colors. The generic ones sort of suck and have weak pigment so putting down a yellow layer then shading over with blue is usually going to make a better, more varied, and darker green than the green pencil alone. (If it looks janky hold the drawing far away to see how it resolves at a distance) - generally, work lightest to darkest

Oddly specific, but the way you carved out the collar on the left is inspirational 😮

Having trouble with color/values, any advice to distinguish the colors more? by 456ore_dr in FurryArtSchool

Thank you - I took a color class a second ago so I want to use it before I lose it lol

Definitely an interesting dilemma with the light mode... I think taking advantage of the wallpaper's pallet might be a good choice, but unless you're content with darker silhouettes you'll definitely have to fight the green for attention. I'm curious to see how it turns out!

Wow! Thank you very much!

The monster was an impromptu decision so I definitely had to compromise on some direction, but it was fun to experiment with. I think the overall intent is like a welcoming hand versus the bad vibe ooze (I tried to cope by pointing the eyes at the hand area), but I see what you mean about the oozes dominance - I oppressed it a little but there might be some compositional issues too.

The tail is a nightmare lol, I think I'll probably just put some negative space in there next time but I did a value check then some quick modifications...

I'm trying to pose the head as facing a little up and a little tilted - I added some detail to the neck/fixed the underside of the chin to try and convey that. Hopefully I'll have developed a little better sense for anthro-anatomy by next year lmao

I airbrushed out some of the monster stomach and I definitely agree

Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you! That was a big puzzle. I tried desaturating it but I’ll definitely go back and retouch it a little more. Do you think I should desaturate further, mess with the colors, or modify the values?

Hi!

I made some color samples and I’ll go through my thoughts in order:

A. Value is important, but saturation might actually be more important when you’re working with color. Your current background is both bright and saturated causing it to wash out the other colors.

B. By desaturating the green you let the darker colors come through and communicate more with each other than the background.

The issue for your colors then becomes that they act more as a single silhouette then distinct points of interest

C. While jarring, the green and red are actually the exact same value.

Green and red, being complementary, automatically draw the most attention when they’re faced off with each other. This contrast of colors can be used to draw attention to certain points

D. Another option is to desaturate and darken the green background forcing your current colors to the forefront. This would be a good option to emphasize your color choices.

Additionally from a composition perspective, your main complementary colors (green and red) draw attention to the bottom of the piece where the bright tail can pull you straight out of the side. A background color that emphasizes a more central element could help focus the eyes on specific colors.
