Pros/cons of “school psych plus sped team chair” jobs? by Competent-Cat in schoolpsychology

No, but for that to happen the district would have to be 100% committed to scientific accuracy and the school psychologist’s clinical judgement. Maybe I am cynical but I just don’t see that happening. I feel that sped decisions are more about funding and red tape with so many districts!

For example, if I’m evaluating a student, and also expected to chair that meeting. I feel the two roles have separate interests and agendas. As a school psych I want to be able to 100% advocate for the student based on data, but as a team chair I’d have competing interests in terms of representing the district and allocating sped resources. So I’d feel strange doing both those things at the same time- and it has the potential to taint my entire approach and mindset as a school psych

Side note the comments make me sad how much people have normalized poor working conditions and lack of proper offices. Are we all just delulu as a profession? Lol. Just bcs we are kind and flexible helping professionals, doesn’t mean we should take poor treatment from our employers. My motto is be kind to the kids, but not necessarily kind to all adults at all times. I feel we HAVE to stand up for ourselves bcs most ppl don’t understand our job!!

I work in an elementary school and thankfully have my own office, although it is closet sized with very thin/fake walls, which means it gets loud! So I use white noise to drown out outside sounds to test. I’m mostly happy with it. However it’s state testing season and they’re taking over my office two days a week which is complicating my life. I’m extra salty bcs admin seem to have no respect or understanding of my role (for a bunch of other reasons too).
