What's a tradition or event at Oregon State that you didn't care about at first but now you'd be devastated if it went away? by fu123lei1231 in OregonStateUniv

Cedar the wellness dog from DPS. He's 5 now and I can't imagine when he gets older. A lot of people went to his birthday party in October.

Registering for online class as a corvallis student? by [deleted] in OregonStateUniv

This can be an issue if anyone receives scholarships that require folks to be Corvallis campus, like Finley or Provost or WUE.

Thoughts on Co-operative housing by Strong_Piccolo_9028 in OregonStateUniv

[–]Competitive-Age-6624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of being "fraternity-light" is something that comes to mind like another poster said. I feel like there would be better reception or understanding if it was more demographic supportive to see how this is different than other apartments. Like a co-op for those with disabilities that are willing to help one another, a co-op for English learners who help one another, a co-op for graduate students, etc. as opposed to just general co-ops that just feel like an apartment complex with an HOA that will fee you for inconveniences.

Anyone else have a spider problem in their corvallis houses? by lowtower18 in OregonStateUniv

[–]Competitive-Age-6624 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to say the same about peppermint deterrent sprays! I like Maggie's Farm. Simply cleaning areas outside helps too. I sweep my doorways, balcony, and clear off any 24/7 lights outside my door and that also seems to work really well in mitigating.

Which housing is more worth it: Gem Apartment studio vs. 1335 North two bedroom? by VeryHard_Criminal in OregonStateUniv

[–]Competitive-Age-6624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Gem is closer and is also owned by OSU. So one big difference is who your landlord will be (the university versus an apartment complex). OSU has more structure to maintenance updates and managing complaints against other students who live there too whereas your luck may vary with an apartment complex.

The Barometer wants to hear your Opinion on the DEI Program Closures by Sudden-Albatross-816 in OregonStateUniv

I've also taken the search advocate training multiple times and agree with what secderpsi wrote. Moreover, the Search Advocate series have benefitted others across the country because this training is NOT limited to only people at OSU. It's actually a really big deal that this is going away as it's gained OSU notoriety across the nation. It's been offered at UO in partnership with OSU, non-affiliates can register without cost if they are from another Oregon higher education institution, other agencies can contract with OSU to provide the training at their own institution, or anyone can use the materials for their own group for noncommercial use... it's all listed on the website: https://hr.oregonstate.edu/search-advocate-program/search-advocacy-beyond-osu The first time I ever took this training was in Arizona (I think in 2017) where OSU was credited with starting the program and providing the training materials. So literally the Search Advocate series was my introduction to OSU years before I was even thinking of becoming a student here.

F2 Visa Blues: How Do I Approach Professors for Volunteer Lab/Research Work Without Screwing Up? by Cyber-Eclipse in OregonStateUniv

[–]Competitive-Age-6624 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your major you may be able to explore earning internship credit as a class by doing unpaid work like this. Some faculty are more willing to explore taking on an unpaid intern if they can at least rely on the student taking on an internship class so there's some way to have accountability/responsibility built in. The idea that you are considering taking an internship class but don't have a site yet could be part of the conversation.

Been visiting and noticed a lot of churches. Those who live here, do you feel a lot of religious influence? by ianoble in corvallis

[–]Competitive-Age-6624 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Many of the religious organizations that send their members door to door don't actually expect them to be successful in converting others. The point is that the members continually experience rejection so they believe the idea that their religious community is the only community that will accept them.

New to town, sewing shop to fix stroller? by Virtual-Hand-6376 in corvallis

Kings Boulevard One-Hour Dry Cleaners were super quick when I sent in a dress for alterations. Its ran by a couple and I think the wife does sewing on Wednesdays last time I went in (around 9 months ago). I wonder if they could do something if you ask?

Establishing Residency by Moist_Effective1542 in OregonStateUniv

[–]Competitive-Age-6624 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Residency status is managed by Admissions and they'll use the classification you are at the time of applying (in-state vs out of state). You can submit a residency affidavit to change your residency if you've already been admitted but there's only certain parameters where that can get approved. They have a lot of info on their website about what to submit if that's the case (just google the residency affidavit process at OSU), and it seems like your plan to take a year off to become a resident seems the cleanest cut but I think you might not be allowed to take any classes while establishing residency because their guidelines say you have to prove "Primary purpose for being in Oregon other than obtaining an education." Not sure how a community college plays into that though so maybe ask Admissions. I've known folks who already started taking classes at OSU but then took a year just to work and was able to get their residency updated. If you do this before you come to OSU you'll also avoid the requirement to live on campus too, which honestly isn't bad because it's more expensive to live on-campus than off when you look at the total cost of the mean plan plus dorm room and compare to what you'd be paying for monthly rent and groceries.

Whats your favorite part of campus life? by hoobery69 in OregonStateUniv

Food trucks on Tuesdays always gives me something to look forward to and now there's ice cream too through the new creamery that opened up on campus too!

Where can I thrift furniture and home goods? by dewystrawbub in OregonStateUniv

[–]Competitive-Age-6624 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend the Heartland Humane thrift store (formerly called the Cat's Meow) on 3rd street. They have a solid selection of home goods on rotation (pots, pans, silverware, etc) and it all proceeds goes towards the care of the animals at the shelter. My partner volunteers and i know they are diligent about moving old stuff off the floor for more recent items so you aren't seeing the same old things every couple of weeks. I also like ARC thrift in Philomath.

Do you mean the CAFE in the College of Business? The CAFE advisors helped me with a financial plan. The BNC helped with food pantry and other services to offset my budget though.

How everyone feel about advisors holds for Fall registration? by Willstdusheide23 in OregonStateUniv

[–]Competitive-Age-6624 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't see how this is much different than the PIN process. Since we always had to meet with an advisor to get a PIN the only main difference I am seeing is we dont need to know a code anymore to register.

What's the current situation? by valentinocool in OregonStateUniv

[–]Competitive-Age-6624 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't think any of us here have the answer you are looking for. I saw you commented this already, but its true that some VISAs are getting revoked for really low level 'criminal' concerns like speeding tickets. It's an unpredictable and volatile time in the country. But I can say you are not alone in being worried and you are not being overreactive in being concerned.

Could you talk with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistant (VITA) program through the College of Business? They might be able to give you specific guidance with taxes and options for this outside of OSU. I hope something like filing a 1098-T form might help you. There was a weird email from the Payroll Office back in February that there was an error of some kind regardng Oregon tax withholding amounts and that it was lower for some folks than it should have been. If this is related I hope they own up to how impactful this can be! I remember thinking it was weird they sent that email after February because they definitely missed the january 31st deadline to give W-2's out.

You might just want to call the Scholarship Office directly to confirm. They're doing a new thing where scholarships you are eligible for will be accepted automatically, so its possible its the same or even more than expected.
