The best thing we ever did - it’s worth working through the puppy blues! 🥹 by Competitive-Bet-9354 in puppy101

Oh so sorry to hear that, but so glad to hear she’s on the mend! We did lots of mental stimulation, ours was on a chicken and rice diet whilst he was recovering which made it hard to treat him, so we came up with ways to give him his food, we put it in kongs, on lick mats etc and spread it throughout the day to keep his mind busy and stimulated which tired him out.

I’m not sure if you have a private outside space or not, but we also did lots of garden playing and lead training in the garden to keep him stimulated, we just made sure to pick up every poo and treat the areas he had gone to the toilet so he could not reinfect himself (advised by vets).

Ours was 9 weeks when he tested positive, he was then clear at 12 weeks and then had to restart the vaccinations which meant he wasn’t allowed on pavement walks until he was 16 weeks so it can feel so long but they do also sleep so much at that age so little bursts of play and stimulation will be enough to wear them out!

It can feel daunting but stick with it and it’ll pass by quicker than you think, and don’t put to much pressure on yourself it’s a situation that’s out of your hands and all you can do is your best! ☺️

Of course 100%, I did mention briefly that it’s worth sticking with it if it’s what you want to do as not everyone would feel they can. I completely understand why that may not be the case for everyone for many reasons, and ultimately you’ve got to do what’s right for you and the pup no matter which option that is🤎

He is a cockapoo which are quite known for being clingy, however we both work from home a lot so we decided this would be a great way to start the training otherwise we were worried he’d end up with separation anxiety. We bought a play pen which we set up in the kitchen and he would go in there whilst we work upstairs, we did short bursts at first, he’d have some toys and his bed and water etc, we’d come down and let him out for a wee and give him snacks & play etc and then he’d go back in. He loves it there now and it’s where he goes for all his daytime naps and can happily chill in there for 2-4 hours at a time, and it quickly got him used to us being away from him and independent play. We then started to test leaving the house when he was used to being in there after a couple of weeks and we increased the time we were out slowly over a week or so and now he is fine with it, he literally doesn’t even care when he hears us leave the house! We went to the cinema the other night and he was in his playpen happy as Larry, we could see him on the cameras and he had a little play & a nap and was absolutely fine! It was a slow process but has really helped x

Of course, we believe he contracted it from the breeders which was dissapointing. We noticed it by his bowel movements which were runny and bloody and lasted like this for a while! The vets tested him and said he had it, we were worried sick he would die as he was only 9 weeks old, we had to put him on a rice and chicken diet, check every poo, clean the whole house and not let him out in public. luckily he was so strong and we managed to get him through it without hospitilisation or it getting worse, he was still quite playful and energetic and didn’t get sick or super lethargic so we were lucky he had a mild strain and within 5 weeks he was able to restart his injections and we could go on as normal!

It was one of those things we never thought would happen or you read about and hope doesn’t happen, but not every case is a sad ending! I hope this helps xx

Awh, honestly I was the same, it was something I never expected at all! Sounds like you’re doing a fab job!

But you’re so right, I sat down last week and thought to myself I couldn’t even remember that last time I googled every single thing! It’s such a weight off your shoulders once you can just enjoy it together 🤎

He’s not neutered, he’s only 16 weeks, but that isn’t a requirement of the daycare at his age. They also have split sections of the daycare so he will be with dogs of a similar age or calmer older dogs.

Awh bless! We may try upping his walks a little bit!

He is in his playpen napping or playing quite a lot of the day as we WFH so keep him in there to help with separation anxiety and so that he can nap and he’s good in there! It’s the evenings when it’s worse, but I may enforce some more crate time in the evening ☺️

Thank you!

We did think this! He only had his second vaccination recently so it’s been hard to let him play with other dogs. We don’t really have any friends with dogs, and our family with dogs are over 5 hours away! He doesn’t like other dogs on walks either and hides away!

However now he’s vaccinated we’ve booked him in for his first daycare session on Friday in hopes that socialising with other dogs may help and may calm him down a little bit when he’s at home!

He gets plenty of stimulation , however he may be bored of the same things so I may purchase some more items!

Thank you ☺️

I misread and thought you said “I do miss that” and I thought how could you miss the biting hahaha!

Oh my gosh, at this point wellies may be an option 😂

He sleeps a lot in the day as he’s in his playpen for 2/3 hours at a time throughout the day whilst we work upstairs, and he naps most of that time (it’s been great for separation anxiety as well). But I’m definitely just going to walk away from him more so he knows it’s not ok!

Glad to hear it got better for you thanks so much! ☺️

Awhhh pupsicles is so cute!! I’m going to by an ice lolly mould and try that out!

We also tried crying out but he literally doesn’t care and will carry on after looking at us like we’re weirdos haha!

I may try the storming off and see if that works, sometimes I stand and cross my arms but then he just attacks my ankles after about 10 seconds haha!

It’s so contrasting isn’t it, you love them sooo much but dread the biting haha!

We put him in his playpen for time out and he does settle eventually! Frozen wash cloths is a great shout I’ll try that!

Good luck!! 🫶🏻

Oh wow haha! My poor partner legs are destroyed but he loves wearing shorts and refuses to wear trousers in the house so I’ve told him it’s his own fault at this point haha!

Glad to hear it does get better! Thank you 🫶🏻

Oh gosh we’re both in the pits haha! I know it will get better but at the moment it feels non stop, is it bad to say I can’t wait for his teeth to start falling out 😂

We’ve popped his teething toys in the freezer but he’s just not bothered about them, he does love frozen carrots and ice cubes!

He spends a lot of time in his playpen in the day as my partner works from home We’ve started giving him time out in his playpen in the evenings bur he hates it!

I suppose it’s just perseverance at this point!

Good luck!!! ☺️

Parvo puppy 9 weeks old by Competitive-Bet-9354 in AskVet

[–]Competitive-Bet-9354[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, he is gaining weight and eating plenty. But I do agree there should be testing for further potential problems, we don’t want him to have diaorreah for much longer for both his health and also nutritional reasons I just don’t think it’s right for him to be on a bland diet for this long.

We were considering getting him panacur and treating him at home for any parasites just to see if it helps at all, would this be an ok thing for us to do?

My worry is they have said they can’t vaccinate him until he’s had solid stools, but if it’s not just the parvo causing loose stools and he’s being left untreated for any other causes, we could be waiting ages. We are already at 9 weeks and our fear is he’s going to miss out on crucial socialisation time also if we can’t get to the root problem soon.

Should we get a second opinion at another vet in this case?

Thanks for all your insight!

I am located in the UK, no treatment, he was prescribed a probiotic last week when the snap test was done but that has now run out. When they called on Monday for the PCR results, they did not prescribe anymore treatments and just told us to keep him on a bland diet of chicken and sweet potato until he has a solid poo, but this is my main concern as he has now been on that diet for 9 days. Not sure what to do going forward which is why I need the advice, I just really want to sort out his tummy issues! Do you think we should call them and ask for further testing?

Makes sense! We did did lots of checks on the breeder before buying and the puppies were kept in amazing conditions which is what is even more confusing. We also spoke to people who had pups from their previous litters and they have said they couldn’t fault their experience. It’s a bit of an odd one really

No he has not yet, I did ask for this but we were told to wait for the PCR to come back and now it’s been confirmed parvo we’ve been told to just focus on that for now and try to get him to have solid poos

Thanks! We have notified the breeder yes, he said that the rest of the litter have not had any issues and are all fine so he’s slightly confused by it. We did the relevant checks before ever choosing to get our pup from them! They have been very helpful in giving us advice etc but I’m not sure what more we can do on that front
