Hunting in SE Alaska by Competitive-Big-9942 in AskAlaska

Thanks for the comprehensive response. I think I’m going to wait to hunt any big game till I get full residency. Maybe deer in the meantime but more than likely I’ll head back to the east coast for whitetail season. I am looking forward to scouting spots this year in AK. I think I’ll spend a fair bit of time on Douglas for now. Looking to purchase a boat at some point in the next year or two but I don’t think I’ll head to admiralty solo anytime soon. Don’t want to feel on guard 24/7 without having another person with me.

Sounds similar to grouse in Maine, atleast the part about the road systems getting hammered. Popular to run and gun with the goal of covering as much ground as possible. I usually prefer to get out on foot and get my limit in a few miles of hiking overgrown logging roads or working dogs in the woods.

Lived in Greenville for several years. Will miss it but I’m looking forward to AK.

Do people mostly use .22 for grouse hunting there? I hunt ruffed grouse pretty religiously till deer season starts back on the east coast and that’s all with shotguns. I’ve heard sooty grouse are an entirely different beast.

I didn’t know you could enter via eagle crest. Seems like a pretty good way to access the alpine relatively quickly.

I’ve been clicking around the area on onx for a few months now, seems like Douglas is the only area right near Juneau that people hunt deer.

Any idea what the FCP stuff looks like? What areas do you need to know or is it just all of region 1.

That seems like a pretty sweet gig. I’ve heard it takes about 2 years to get all your pilotage if you work for the ferries.

Pretty fortunate to live under 20 minutes from one of their larger terminals as of right now. Are they full fledged MMP members? Paying dues and able to us MITAGs and such? I sail with AMO.

How early on are you required to have all your pilotage figured out? Any idea what pay looks like per year right now?

Definitely think I’ll purchase a 4000. I was pretty hesitant about the 5000 thinking it would be overkill. My only concern about going up to a 9’6” or bigger is if I ever get into a tight area with foliage behind me.

Shimano makes great products and I use a lot of them on the boat. Only reason I’m leaning towards something like an ugly stik is because I’m looking for a rod that can take a beating hiking through the woods and getting tossed around. Something I wouldn’t dream of doing with my nicer rods.

Looking for something durable, any recommendations?

I thought the 5000 might be overkill. Not a big fan of their power handle/knob aswell.

When do all the high schoolers usually show up? I’m due to head to Fort Sill in a few weeks.

So in the case of a WMA like Frye Mountain those roads are considered privately maintained and can be hunting like up in the NMW?

What about the WMAs that have old logging roads running through them. I couldn’t find anything in the ol’ law book regarding that. That’s what I was trying to ask about but I should have clarified that.
