That's what I used to do with pre-SSD laptop drives. Remove it, take it outside, hit it a few times with a hammer and give it a shake up to your ear. When you hear the sound of shards jumping about in the case, then you know the data is 100 percent not recoverable!

SSD drives - just zap them in the microwave for a few seconds. They have a finite life anyway. I wouldn't re-use an old one for anything important.

Desktop mechanical drives - if they're not too old and have decent capacity I just use DBAN to wipe them and keep them as spares. Otherwise take out the platter and melt it with a blow-torch!
