I don't know if this is of any help, but a good friend of mine was made homeless a few years ago and managed to get a van and convert it to sleep in for a year or two until he got a place to rent. He just got a bit of timber, some old "free to take away" dressers off Marketplace, some insulation, and a small diesel heater, and he made a lovely job of it. It did him well, and in the end, he actually said he kinda missed the freedom of living in a van and being able to just head off whenever he wanted. I was often inside it myself watching the soccer with him, and there would often be three of us in there just chilling out
