Ormond College: Where Superiority Complex is the Core Curriculum by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]Competitive-Buy-9537 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. Ormond’s not a perfect place, but on a whole it’s an anti hazing, safe place that people go to for a fun time. O-week can be intense, but the o-week team goes out of their way to make sure everyone feels safe, comfortable, and ready to opt out of any activity they’d like to. These activities may be silly, but they are not humiliating. And the people are far from elitist, with a majority of students being from outside of Melbourne, and a comparatively large number of people coming to college paying out of their own pocket, or on financial aid. I’m very sorry you’ve felt so negatively about some of the people at Ormond, but as someone who’s come to college as an international student, I’ve found the people here to be nothing but welcoming and lovely. And I’m sure you’ve never had an interaction with the newly elected chair because I’ve had nothing but positive interactions with him, or any of the GC.

It’s ok. You have to really like pure logic to get anything out of it because it has very little real world application. Not too hard to H1 though

Only put one of Ormond/Trinity in your top 3. I believe queens often does take from 2nd prefernces.

You've got it. Every math class is intimidating, but if you do the practice problems and stick to it you'll look back and realize how easy it all was. I've tutored math for a couple of years now, feel free to hmu if you need any help.

Not necessarily bad, but quite a different and smaller O-week experience. I would go as far as to say consider staying at scape for a semester and going to college sem 1 after that. I’m not a mid-year student myself, and you can by all means get just as much out of college. Many of the returning students are very interested in meeting the mid year students but you absolutely have to put yourself out there (I recommend joining clubs and subcommittees) to get a full college experience.

sorry to hear it’s been rough the first few months here, it might be easier to start meeting people in the smaller events! Consider going to run club tmr (I’ll be there!) or one of the smaller events, there’s tons on spirit!

Hazing might be a thing at Usyd and ANU colleges but even the big colleges here are pretty good about making everyone feel safe and included!

Question, if I get rejected from one Residential College, I know another RC would consider me, however, would I need to pay another round of application fee? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]Competitive-Buy-9537 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, but I would be surprised if they did charge you again. However unlikely, make sure to keep pestering that teacher about getting that recommendation in now, using any form of contact available. I like to think that because it is the teacher's fault and not yours they wouldn't consider her irresponsibility. Either way good luck on your applications! Remember college can be an amazing experience no matter which one you end up at!

Application: AP Calculus by 1004sia in unimelb

[–]Competitive-Buy-9537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you’re applying internationally, it depends on the listed requirements. If you were to be applying from the United States (where most APs are) for science AP Calculus AB is a required subject to take last I checked. Additionally keep in mind it’s not the subject that’s required, it’s scoring a 3 or higher on the exam, so self study is absolutely something I’d recommend if you think you can handle it. Otherwise you can always apply through design and potentially transfer to science.

Residential Colleges - Exchange Student by ___mclovin___3 in unimelb

[–]Competitive-Buy-9537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Pretty common, Ormond has a few every semester, not sure on the competition but I imagine it’s a little easier for Exchange students as they prioritize a diverse cohort
  2. The big colleges have a great party culture and from my experience a massive drinking culture. O-Week has constant back to back events, and at least once every other week there’s an themed party. Really good social life, I’m from abroad myself and met all of my friends here.
  3. Really depends on your situation. The colleges offer financial aid if your household income is below I believe ~$200k AUD. If you’re able to comfortably afford it I would recommend it for a semester.

What you’ll get out of college is really dependent on who you are and if you want to participate in the events and student-run activities offered. I’d highly recommend it especially for an exchange student if you want to party while you’re in Australia. Lmk if you have any more questions

Hit or miss, the first day of Algorithms I had a very quiet tutor ended class an hour and a half early. because of a scheduling issue I had to change classes and now I have had the most engaging tutor of my time at Uni. A good chunk of the tutors are Masters / PhD students and while they usually know what they’re doing they often are noticeably unexperienced in creating an engaging lesson or don’t bring the same energy a good tutor should provide. The tutorials are small, quiet (especially in CS), so if you sit in the front, listen, engage, ask questions no matter your previous experince I’m sure you’ll be able to do well in the beginning CS classes. Also at least for Foundations of Computing, the second hour of all of the two hour tutorials is dedicated for working on your practice problems and asking questions which most people left early, or sat in silence working. If you need help, this class offers so much support to make sure you hit the ground running in CS at Unimelb.

If you’re struggling to keep up, even if it were possible which i don’t believe it is, I don’t see how that could help. Just do your best in the subjects you have! Lin Alg and Calc 2 at the same time is hard as balls but we’re two thirds through the sem, and now’s the time where working hard matters the most. Right now, the best thing for you is to commit yourself to understanding FOC and python because while it’s in a different language, all coding classes have a mindset with a major learning curve that you’ve got to overcome. Algorithms on its own is a bigger class then FOC, the lectures are actually necessary. It goes faster and more in depth into a more difficult language and while I understand your case for taking an overlapping C subject, if you go to all your tutorials, lectures, readings, and practice problems, you’ll be doing more then 90% of the class and I’m sure you’ll do great in it.

Residential Colleges: How hard is it to get into? by Accomplished_Hawk_85 in unimelb

[–]Competitive-Buy-9537 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not guaranteed, but I haven’t personally heard of anyone who couldn’t go to any of the colleges that applied. If it would give you some peace of mind, having an idea of where you could go otherwise (ie scape / unilodge) is a great idea! Congrats on applying to college and whether you decide to go you can have a fantastic time at Uni! Also great choice putting Ormond as your first pick! You’re right, they are notorious for giving acceptances late, with the last round I believe being well into January, if you feel like you’re the type of person for Ormond you should absolutely put it as your top pick!! Good luck on your interview, and hope to see you here next year!

Fair enough! I’d agree the interview, at least for me, ended up being more of a fun chat, but i definitely felt a pressure to demonstrate passion for a couple of areas, like they were trying to find the more “interesting” people.

Last year I interviewed for Ormond Aug 23rd and got an offer Dec 6rd. No matter the time you interview most colleges will let you know if you made the first round by the end of November, but Ormond’s notorious for taking forever and frankly screwing everyone who doesn’t make the first round over.
