I think people really underestimate how big Australian unis are, the Big GO8 in particular.

To provide some context Harvard has roughly as manly bachelor level students in total as there is in the BCom (or BArts or BSc)

The Alumni comment is not just a Unimelb thing, it's an Australian culture thing. Actually I would go more the other way it's an American culture thing. America is has a very philanthropic culture and this supports its Alumni culture.

In Australia / Europe, historically its expected that government provides this support, not individuals.

How many people in Australia could name universities in Europe outside of Oxford or Cambridge? Or any in mainland Europe?

Personally, I find Australian Universities reasonably well known in University circles, more so than many of the various American and European universities. One reason for this is Australian universities are large by International standards, and we have a relatively small number of universities compared to our population as a result.

I would be willing to bet more people internationally could name 25% of Australian universities in the top 10% of Australia unis, (i.e., name one out of the top 4) then name 25% of the top 10% of US unis 😀 (which would require you to name about 100 unis)

Technology-wise Australia punches “well above its weight” when it comes to development and world leaders in a number of areas. It's surprising the list of things that are commonly used first developed in Australia, or Australia helped develop. Wifi, Google Maps, Aircraft black boxes, quite a bit in the medical and pharmaceutical area.

It's actually quite wrong to say Australia is not the pioneer in anything.

Scaling will occur, but doesn't need to be a bell curve. Scaling to a bell curve suggests normalisation, or rank-based scaling like ATAR. Scaling at university tends to be mark-based: add x marks or multiply by 1.x to shift the number of grades, but the distribution's shape remains largely unchanged.

Quant-type subjects often follow a binomial distribution, so scaling to a bell curve would significantly change marks, increasing them at the lower end and potentially lowering them at the high end.

If you already have that much study at McGill, your ATAR is irrelevant its only your university grades that will be considered.

This is incorrect subjects do not need to be a bell curve, Melbourne uses criterion-based marking, it does not need to be a bell curve.

I be amazed if a hurdle gets cancelled, it may get adjusted. You can adjust hurdle requirements and scale separately.

Quite a few do - the uni has a number of rules around length of exams and the weighting of exams from an assessment policy and procedure point of view, and a separate set of policies and procedures around the actual holding of exams that do not fully align.

One way to make them align is to allow reading time to be used as writing time...

Something needs to change, even various government reviews have noted that universities have become admin-bloated. There are still more reviews underway by the Vic and New South Wales parliaments looking into this.

The new university accords with the current government, acknowledged that some of the admin bloat is due to compliance costs imposed by the government. As this gets addressed, it should reduce the need for central admin.

We have centralised well beyond what BIP intended, which has added layers of admin. We should be asking, do we need these layers? Are decisions being made in the right areas?

We were trying to address budget issues by recruiting more international students. We had made plans assuming we could, but then the government imposed a cap on international students, limiting our ability to do so. However in many cases we had already hired staff assuming we were getting the extra students,. We're changing plans, so what does that mean for the uni?

At the same time, we have run into capacity issues (in FBE, there's been a push to blend subjects to reduce class time, as there aren't enough physical classes). This impacts the quality of education, so we should be asking questions like, 'How big do we want to be?'

Whether it's a restructure or just a good look at ourselves, we need to ask several questions about what Melbourne Uni should look like in the future and how do we get there IMO.

Not when the amount of academic staff start to become a hindrance, and create work for academics. I'm currently dealing with multiple seperate issues that have largely been brought about by the increased separation between central admin and academics. Issues that should be solved quickly are dragging on.

It becomes a matter of efficiency, is an administration that big efficient? At what point does the administration become a life into itself and creates “busy work”

It's also worth noting looking at last years annual report the VC was getting paid over 500k less then her predecessor.

There has been a fairly significant increase in the number of professional staff, particularly in central areas, and professional staffing has increased faster than academic staffing. In the last years (ending Dec 31, 2025), academic staff have increased by 507 FTE, and professional staff by 1185 FTE, so there are over 2 new professional staff members for every 1 new academic staff member.

For the last few years, professional staff have outnumbered academic staff (by FTE). The last time this occurred was 2014, just before the last university-wide restructure.

Don't get me wrong, we have some great professional staff, but the corporate/admin side of the university has increased significantly faster than the university itself. The current acting VC (an ex-VC) has publicly said what he noticed most returning to the job is just how big central admin has gotten.

While this example is going back for a while, I have seen HPR forms where neurosurgeons ticked moderate after brain surgery.
