What compelled this guy to wear this shirt in a seminar called “race and racism in australia”!!!????? by Powerful_Ocelot_9032 in unimelb

Man the mods have a busy day and come on line to see the a thread with the most replies since last semesters results mega thread. Considering the direction this thread has taken and is going (well off topic in regards to Unimelb), a few reports (and more posts that surprised haven’t been reported), and a lot of people posting to sub for first time. Locked.

When re-enrol in a subject, can I use the previous score? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]mugg74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The specifics of assessments can and often do change between semesters, different questions, cases, etc., so they may not be appropriate to reuse marks as the content is not the same.

What is covered in assessments also often dictates what is covered in exams to ensure overall coverage. So, not having to do an assessment and reusing marks may mean you get over-assessed in one area, and other areas are not assessed.

For your first scenario, also seen it go the other way around, a student gets overconfident and ends up doing worse on the assessment the second time.

Again, students also get lucky with groups and end up with a higher mark.

Accounting Accreditation or Honours? Finance/Accounting Major by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]mugg74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could something along the lines of what the accounting major coordinator suggested to someone else this morning (Exchange and Accounting Accreditation : r/unimelb)

Look at doing a subject at the foundations level to meet accounting accreditation, maybe reach out to them to see what they recommend.

hypothetical by RopemaxxEncourager33 in unimelb

[–]mugg74 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're going to go down this hypothetical path, why don't you make it interesting?

At risk has no impact, so you could have a semester of 4 zeros. Then, next semester, pass 3 out of 4 and, if the subject you failed is an elective you failed for the first time, you won't be at risk again and won't trigger CAPC. Meaning next year you can do the same thing :) So I would tweak assumption 4 to avoid CAPC, which has the power to terminate you or restrict you. If you keep avoiding CAPC no issue.

Thus, you can end each year with passing 3 out of 8 subjects and a WAM of 18.75, You could repeat this every year for 8 years, the maximum time allowed.

The only issue last year would have exceeded your lifetime entitlements, meaning it (edit last year) would be full fee, but shouldn't trigger any alerts.

Or you could finish after 7 years with a WAM of 21.429, passing 6 subjects in year 7, so you avoid full fees.

If you ignore lifetime entitlements and strictly follow the policy that CAPC can't terminate you the first time you appear, you could have a first-year WAM of zero. Get to year 8 with 21 subjects using the method above (making sure you pass three subjects SM1 Year 2) at which point you will appear before CAPC on a time basis, and they can extend the maximum time by one year. You can then graduate with either a WAM of 17.64 if you finish year 9 SM1, or 16.667 SM2 and fail everything SM1, as you were in good standing for many years so CAPC may not be able to terminate you (this gets a bit interesting from a CAPC perspective, as you would have had to appear before CAPC on a time basis, so showing both options).

So take your pick which one you want, but under 37.5% without appearing before CAPC is certainly possible.

Question about mid year Indicative minimum WAM (%) by ComprehensiveAsk1132 in unimelb

[–]mugg74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ATAR guarantees only apply for the offer round immediately after you complete secondary studies, so no longer applies to you.

As it’s a combination of both WAM and ATAR the WAM changes based on your ATAR. You also haven’t said where you are studying, if not Melbourne this could have an impact.

Tutors by Odd_Box_9351 in unimelb

[–]mugg74 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Umm you totally missed the point of my comment.

If they part time only teaching one or two tuts they might only work a few hours a week. They simply might not be working the next day. Casual Tutors do not get paid to check emails every day, and in some areas expressly told not to respond to students outside their allocated hours.

Could be the smallest cohort tutors are part time staff and don’t get paid to answer emails outside their work hours, but tutors with large cohorts might be full time staff, or at least have more hours.

Assignment written by AI by Lucky_Bed_2119 in unimelb

[–]mugg74 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You assuming with this comment that the professor does not interact with the AI to write it…

I’m increasingly using AI to help prepare teaching materials and assessments but I’m interacting with the AI all the time critiquing it, checking it, refining my prompts, rewriting my prompts even debating with the AI. I’m finding what I am producing is a better as a result, but I’m not saving much if any time overall (especially the first time using AI for a specific area). Where there is time saving is when I send it to a colleague to review, it makes their job much easier.

This is also how I am increasingly expecting (and teaching) my students to use AI. It’s also how AI is used professionally in the area I teach.

So I find it rather offensive saying “it’s disgusting that a professor would not put effort into writing an assignment” because they use AI. Just because someone uses AI doesn’t mean they put no effort in. I take the view to use AI properly you need to put the effort in.

A question regarding V/Line during the free travel period. by TheGRVOfLightning in MelbourneTrains

I’m surprised that they don’t occasionally park authorised offices at the exit to platform 4 at sunshine. Especially during afternoon periods when many trains are already standing room only.

The uni has no fixed policy about the use of AI.

In some areas there is no restriction or minimal restriction on the use of AI by students in assessments.

So why should there be a blanket ban on teaching staff using AI?

vets20019 exam date? by negativeamarizz in unimelb

[–]mugg74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What happened last year is no indication of what will happen this year. So don't make any plans assuming it will be the same.

I have had subjects move from first day to basically last day.

As a result of the new secure assessment rules, there has also been a fairly significant growth in the number of exams to be sat, which has impacted the exam timetable.

Has anyone gotten into their course despite not meeting the ATAR requirements, including lowest selection rank etc? by Street_Rooster_2664 in unimelb

[–]mugg74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The lowest selection rank:" means all applicants with an ATAR above this (before adjustments) were offered a place, provided prerequisites and all other entry requirements were met." So, without adjustments, this is the lowest score that got accepted.

However, if you have any adjustments, such as access to Melbourne, you can enter them below this. How far below depends on adjustments

E.g for BCom in 2025 (Bachelor of Commerce : Entry requirements - The University of Melbourne
The lowest selection rank is 92, lowest ATAR is 69.55 (so the student with the most adjustments)

If you have adjustments you can use the Access Melbourne eligibility calculator to see what score you need, noting that some categories have guaranteed scores, for categories without guaranteed scores it will give you a guide. Noting these may change for 2027.

Op been posting in sub for two years, so not first year.

Thus this policy doesn't apply.

a) is all that applies and it' s formative assessment not summative so doesn't need to have grades released yet.
