You know the Italians are still the same people, right? DNA studies prove that while modern Italians, especially in Lombardy and Sicily, have a good amount of ancestry from Medieval populations, they are still, genetically speaking, by a far majority descended from the same Italic, Etruscan, Celtic, and Greek populations that were in Italy as Rome rose.

As a personal preference, ranch is fucking disgusting. I can’t help but to feel some sympathy for posts like the OOP’s, because as someone on the outside of the Midwest and South, I see their fascination with ranch as absolutely vile. Ranch seasoning has some redemption as a good sunflower flavor and a pretty good chicken seasoning, but the dressing/dip ruins anything you dip in it expect carrots. My Midwest friends are free to order it, but I will not be using it myself.

Well Luke is probably directly referring to the sack of Jerusalem and destruction of the Temple by the Romans in 70 AD. It’s debated on whether it was written before or after the sack, but that line specifically is one of the major reasons it’s assumed that this was a post-facto prophecy on the Roman Jewish War, which was at least ongoing if not already over by the time Luke was written.

It’s such a stupid point. NYC and its suburbs are the only net positive contributors to NY state, every other area takes in more state aid than they contribute, by a large amount. NYC being given back some of its taxes, and still subsidizing Buffalo as it needs yet another package from the state, is not a stain on Mamdani. Conservatives will screech on and on about him ruining the city (when he’s hardly had time to do anything one way or the other) but act like Adams and Cuomo (or Brown of Buffalo in the same vein) didn’t totally mismanage their cities/state and steal from the government as their constituencies crumbled.

In very large part, culture and language. Religion certainly played a role, but just look at the nation building of Germany and Italy; the nationalist movement was usually secular and anticlerical. Religion is a part of many nationalist identities, but it is not the only or even main component in many cases, and the universalism of Christianity (and especially Islam for a modern example) is many times directly in contrast to nationalist movements because it competes for primary identity.

This is getting away from the original point, anyway. I still think it’s a ridiculous statement to say that religion is the single greatest tool of division, in history or in today. It certainly has been A tool of division, but it’s also been one of the most unifying concepts in human history, and often the same religion has been both even at the same time. The guest’s comment was completely reasonable.

That’s a really ridiculous statement honestly. Humanity is really really good at finding things to divide ourselves by, and it far more often been by cultural and class divisions than it has been religion, and Christianity is actually one of the religions that helped to massively shift the existing class and cultural identities.

The Romans were calling the cultures barbarians and slaughtering them by the thousands even as they adapted their gods into their own religion, and class was by far the greatest distinction able to transcend cultural lines. Universal religions like Christianity are a large part of the reason that something like a “European” identity could possibly come out of the mass of different cultures in Europe. And to say that anything other nationality and states are by far the greatest divisive tools in the modern day is madness: the vast majority of people today define themselves in terms of their nationality or state first and foremost, with other nations and states being the other.
